Penguin Matters! :)

Welcome to the second version of this thread. The first version was created in December 2010, but needed to be updated/streamlined and some of our original contributors are not around to help us do that.

I would like to thank Secretwishes. She closed her Penguin Information thread and generously gave us permission to use her comprehensive information in this thread. Since then, others have contributed information here as well. Our hats are off to the many people who created this treasure trove of information about penguins.

We encourage reporting of penguins found throughout the RS worlds and will continue to provide useful information about this addictive D & D of penguin spying.

Penguin spottings, shadows, stories, questions, and comments are always welcome.

Please sit back and enjoy the popcorn as Cave mesmerizes us with the history of penguin spying and the whisperers. :)

All the best :)

We sincerely appreciate Cpt Cave's dedication to recording history. I have edited [his two original posts, which are now Chewy's dessert, for brevity.

When Cpt Cave was a lad :)

or
A short history of penguin whispering

In the summer of 2009, a small group of dedicated players, later to be named ‘penguin whisperers’, managed to successfully trap multiple penguins near each other across different worlds of runescape, over a number of weeks, which were then posted in the forums only . They set a new trend in penguin hide and seek.

Until then, penguin hunting was primarily based on clan chats in one single world, with penguins shifting locations frequently. Penguin whispering has its roots in the earliest exploits of penguin hide and seek, which took a more definitive shape on world 60. In game clan chats were greatly beneficial at that time because no one really knew much about penguin movements, respawn locations, and the possibilities of traps. For that model, you needed a clan chat as a mean means of communication, as the locations would change very rapidly.

A few weeks into penguin hide and seek, it became clear that these activities could be well supported by the forums, which incidentally also provides players the opportunity to profile themselves more publicly as key organizers of this distraction and diversion. Eventually a number of penguin hunters separated from the original group and formed other groups.

During that interlude, when essentially two clans took care of all the penguin hunting on world 60, members from both clans started to find each other and penguins and, irrespective of their clan associations, started to work together to trap penguins and find creative solutions for communication across two competing clans.

to be continued...

When I was a lad, I had to walk 20 miles in the snow to find a penguin...

By the time the oldest clan broke up in February 2009, many people were infected with the penguin trapping virus; which also gave rise to differing thoughts about how to spy penguins.

In June 2009 an alternative way of trapping penguins became established as a viable form of gameplay. The new way of doing penguins, however, has transformed the whole penguin hunting experience. This approach has three major features: (1) the way in which avatars interact with penguin pixels (which is perhaps best described as a form of dancing based on choreographies of anticipation and improvisation); (2) the way in which interpersonal communication is being conducted, no clans and ranks, but a strong emphasis on personal involvement, care and response; and (3) the main form of public communication, which does not rely on clan chats but takes place via forum threads only.

In September 2009, penguin whispering moved to world 71 and adopted a more permanent form with weekly recurrent threads. It quickly moved to take on a second world (99), which lasted until 2015. Penguin whispering also moved to German speaking communities between 2009 and 2014. Multitrapping has now become a major feature of penguin hide and seek on an increasing number of worlds.

Penguin Whispering has always managed to find lasting, secure, self-maintained traps for penguins and as evidence that it is indeed different, the growth of its popularity has not negatively affected the quality of the penguin hunting experience. Despite the increasing frequency of penguin spying activities, hunters have - without exception - been careful, responsible, friendly and helpful. For this we are grateful as it is.

Dear Friends and Guests

Ever had the odd experience to be minding your own business, when all of a sudden, you are being interrupted by noisy clunks and beeps? Annoying isn’t it?

These noises are caused by badly disguise penguin-spies who clearly are not minding their own business at all.

This thread offers you an opportunity to do something about it: counter-espionage.

We love to hunt those spies in different worlds across the whole of runescape, and we invite you to report any sighting of any penguin on any world here. They do not need to be trapped, but it would help us to know if they were trapped.

So perhaps we could persuade you to use a template?

Time of Sighting:

World:

Disguise:

Location:

Trapped or Roaming:

Any other particulars:

Needless to say, this template is optional, but we hope it helps and saves time. After all, most people have better things to do than fretting over penguins all the time ;)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS

Q. Can the penguins climb ladders?
A. No, but they can go up ramps.

Q. Can they go into buildings that have doors that open throughout RS?
A. Yes they can.

Q. Some players say the penguins make a sound; can you describe this sound?
A. They make a sound like a broken squeaky spring, make sure you turn your sound on.
To hear it: TURN SOUND EFFECTS ON. Then, TURN RS MUSIC OFF

Q. Can there be more than one penguin at a designated clue location or even at any location at the same time?
A. Yes, a penguins roam range can be wide and may or may not overlap another penguin.
This can lead to the sighting of multiple penguins in one area. Also, more than one penguin can have the same clue.

Q. Can I find the exact same penguin at the exact same location on all the worlds?
A. Not always no, due to their ability to roam

Q. Does a penguin on one world have the same clue as its counterpart on another world?
A. At reset, they do. But throughout the week, they change.

Q. Can penguins become trapped or stuck?
A. Yes, Penguins have been know to find naturally occurring RS traps on their own.

PENGUIN POINTS

Q. I was told that I can obtain more than 15 points per week; is this true?
A. Yes. If you complete 'The Hunt for Red Raktuber' quest, you will be able to spy on a Polar Bear in a well for one extra point per week, giving you a possible 16 points per week. You can also spy an 11th penguin known as the Ghost Penguin if you have a Ring of Visibilty for an additional 3 points, making it possible to get 19 points a week.

Q. Where are the wells Located?
A. There are wells throughout the lands of RS and the location of the Polar Bear changes from week to week.

Q. I have just completed "The Hunt for Red Raktuber" and I cannot find Larry anywhere. Where is he?
A. Chuck the Polar Bear is your contact now and he is located east of Larry's old spot.

SPYING on the PENGUINS

Q. What is the best way to spy on the penguins?
A. There is no right or wrong way to spy on them. Some spy with friends or a clan and some spy solo. You can find penguins quite quickly by having the W71 forum open on a seperate page while in the game on another.

Q. Can you recommend a way to spy on the penguins?
A. This is the approach that many hunters use:

1. Turn RUN OFF and STOPPING as you get near the general location of the trap.
2. Close the doors after you spy (if there are doors).
3. If a penguin is trapped in a fenced area, you do not have to always open the fence to spy it, so spying from outside the fenced area whenever possible helps immensely
4. If a trap doesn't have a door but the penguin seems trapped spy at a distance to help keep it there.
5. Try not to step on trappers or you will break the trap.
6. Try to keep spirit familiars away from a penguin as they can disrupt a herders work when trapping.
7. Teleport out of a location, if possible.

Q. Is there only one world to spy on penguins easily?
A. No. There are many players across RS worlds who are tracking and trapping multiple penguins in one area or trapping penguins in accessible areas.

PENGUIN DISGUISES & POINT VALUE

Below lists all of the penguins which have been seen since the beginning of Penguin Hide & Seek and their point values in alphabetical order. The list will be updated as more penguins are discovered.

You can find out which penguins are around each week by checking out the W71 Penguin Whisperers thread which gets created every week usually by
Twillow
.

Note: Penguins marked with an asterix(*) means that some weeks there are more than one of that type of penguin in a certain area (i.e. 2 Wilderness Penguins with different respawn locations in the same week)

-- -- The Ghost Penguin -- --
Guide content kindly provided by Ghost Penguin

The Ghost Penguin is an additional penguin spy unlocked after completing the Some Like it Cold quest. Players require a Ring of Visibility (after completing a part of the Desert Treasure quest by talking to Rasolo, a wandering merchant west of the Fishing Guild) to spy the ghost before obtaining Sliske's gift after the Fate of the Gods quest.

This penguin is hard to find; it has a blueish ghostly appearance. It teleports around RuneScape frequently to a new spawn. It can also walk through players, some walls, NPC'S, water and hills. Upon spying the penguin you will be rewarded 3 penguin points which you can exchange with Chuck like your other penguin points.

Tips:

While you may watch any spawn, it is recommended to watch one of these spawns or hop between them:
• Goblin Village, Death Plateau, Zanaris, Draynor Manor, Dorgesh-Kaan, McGrubor's Wood, Lumber Yard.

If the ghost penguin goes on water/hills, use a item in your inventory on it and it'll try to take you to the penguin.

Particulars:

• Chuck does not give any clues to its location
• The examine is License to Chill
• It does not show up as a dot on the minimap
• It makes a faint ambient sound when it moves, which sounds like crunching on snow
• It will not be at the same location on all worlds (for example, if it was on W71 at Rellekka it does not mean it will be there on W36)
