Hey JMods and Scapers,

Let me start by saying I greatly appreciate RuneScape having active developers for fresh in game content. That being said, updates are coming and the economy is going bananas! I would like to hear people's opinions on their current outlook on the fractured staff of armadyl and animate dead...

My personal opinion for FSOA: Fractured staff of armadyl is NOT as broken as people say. First, we must understand what can make FSOA perform to its maximum potential. Because FSOA relays on critical hits to generate additional auto damage, one must max out their critical hit chance. Doing this is usually very expensive (like 10m+ per hour in consumable cost). I think rather than nerf the staff changes could be made to rely less on crit chance. That way even if it did shift the meta it would still remain a relevant t95 end game item for everyone who grinded hard to get it!

My personal opinion for animate dead: I agree change is needed for animate dead. I believe that magic out of all the styles should not be the tankiest style. However, I do think if animate dead is nerfed, magic tank armor should be buffed. With the recent changes to Croesus drop table decrease, a big nerf to animate dead would make magic tank armor have little to no value.

Conclusion and last thoughts: Best in slot end game items deserve to have significant value. If significant nerfs happen it should be closer to launch of the item, so that players who have adapted to way of combat don't have to completely re-learn a different way to fight the same content. Maybe this update is to make room for inevitable future power-creep, but it would be nice not to shake the foundation of already learned methods.

Unfortunately I don't fully agree. The points you made about costs per hour, changes so late, and desire to not have to relearn/change how an item operates are good ones though.

I don't support the nerf to animate dead at all and am not thrilled about the FOSA change but Jagex has a point on FOSA.

I have one, I'm not good at PVM and I really can't use it to it's potential. And, unfortunately, I often still need a yak for food. As a result it's just a glorified SOS for me anyway.

As I see it FOSA works now for the 10%, maybe 25%, of people who are good enough to ditch the yak for a Kal'gerion familar, berserker ring, and EOF with the Arma staff spec.

Great, if you can both use it, AND, afford the cost in runes and roughly 4 billion in gear costs before the the proposed changes. Most can't.

The point Jagex made about not being able to add items/abilities etc. that affect critical hit is real. FOSA is soley responsible for the existing stagnation in any more critical hit based items or abilities that could even remotely be used with magic, even by way of a gear switch. Therefore, I don't agree with the just lessening FOSA's synergy with critical hits.

I don't like the fact that Jagex is proposing changes so long after FOSA release and one prior major nerf, but some changes to how it operates are appropriate. I would suggest they make sure the damage output remain very close to it's current potential though.

It's not just FOSA though you realize. Jagex is almost 100% going to do something similar to the Last Gaurdian's bow as well. It's just a matter of time in my opinion.

Animate dead change is kinda annoying for my personal pvm uses but at least it'll make buying a set for my friend cheaper. I like the fsoa changes because it made the staff crash in price and that its spec no longer being such a rune sponge will make runes cheaper. Unfortunate animate change will make attempting normal mode zuk even harder and costly. When the nerf does drop next month, maybe the staff nerf will be balanced enough to where jagex will enable it for pvp as it currently has no effect in pvp.

FSOA idea for change:
I do think that instead of making FSOA a lesser synergistic item with crit, they just change it completely.
For example, give it's spec the ability to do the time time snap shot interaction that occurs during Kerpac. I heard them saying that they were worried about people EOFing.

Conclusion and concerns
: To be honest it doesn't seem like they care if it becomes a relevant weapon. Presenting a new t99 weapon would make all of RS grind in the same way we did for the t95s. Our grinds = buying more memberships. I do think this type of very late item adjustment is at the very least inconsiderate of players' time. I am glad that I have other BIS styles, but if they continue down this road of post release nerfs, they will lose people like they did with the harsh release of EOC in 2012.

Going forward:
The content that I and many players that I've talked to consider was the "golden era" of RS, was things that involved mixing of players in community combat. I think pvp balancing is almost too far gone to even attempt. However, if they revamped void knight or like a community shattered worlds minigame, I think they would get a lot of attraction.
