Here is yet another reposted version of the famous Bored? Draw #ere! sticky.

Ever wondered why it's Draw #ere! and not Draw 'ere!? Simple typo, but it's one that has become Forum lore! :)

Anyone who is looking for a logo for their Clan should head over to the Clan Discussion forum to the Clan Logo thread . We have a ton of talented artists specialised in clan logos waiting for your requests! You might even see some familiar heads popping through from here!

Sticky Specific Rules:

1. Posting obscene pictures may be a great display of your artistic talents but will unfortunately result in a ban.

2. It may be the highest form of flattery but please don't copy other people's work!

3. I'm sure it goes without saying, but just to put it out there, all other forum rules apply.

Jameo50's guide to THE BASICS of ASCII ART

This guide only teaches you how to draw without your picture messing up. It won't make you an expert; That comes with practice.

There are two styles of ASCII Art: Alligned and Unalligned.
If you're just starting out it is recommended you start with ALLIGNED as this will give you a feel for how you can shape different images with the ASCII characters.

Heres a quick Crash Course in drawing Alligned ASCII Art:

1. The size of the character you use determines how much you can put on one line.
These characters are recommended for drawing: _ 1 4 8 ¶. You can put 63 of those on one line**
*
*******;- This little guy here is made by holding down the "ALT" key on your keyboard and inputting the code: 0182 whilst still holding "ALT" into your NumPad.

- Top Tip: When you get finished with one line, press Enter; don't let it go to the next line automatically.

2. Some symbols are bigger than others:

++++++++++
----------

There are 10 of each of those symbols, however they are obviously different lengths.
So try to use symbols that are the same size if you want your drawing to come out right.
If you want to find out what symbols are the same size, use this method:

Press Shift+\ to make |
Make two of them together, then press enter and make another two together, like this:

||
||

Put the symbols you want to measure in between the lines. If I wanted to measure + and *, this is how I would put it:

|#####|
|&&&&&|

I put 5 Hashes (#) and 5 Ampersands (&amp ;) in between the lines.
The lines at the end aren't even. Five Hashes take up more space than five Ampersands, so if I try to use those together in a drawing, it's going to mess up.
You can tell that these next ones are the same size because the last | are lined up:

|44444l
|¶¶¶¶¶l

- Ignore the last part of Tip #2 if it's too confusing. Just use _ 1 4 8 ¶ because they don't censor and they're the same size.

3. Angles are a good way to show shape

By using different characters at different points along the line, you can create lines and shapes at different angles by using multiple lines in the paragraph.
This can be done easily with a little effort. Here's an example:

_________________________¶¶¶¶¶________¶¶¶¶______¶¶¶_____¶¶__¶¶__¶¶__¶¶__¶¶
____________________¶¶¶¶¶_________¶¶¶¶_______¶¶¶______¶¶___¶¶__¶¶___¶¶__¶¶
_______________¶¶¶¶¶__________¶¶¶¶________¶¶¶______¶¶____¶¶¶__¶¶___¶¶___¶¶
__________¶¶¶¶¶___________¶¶¶¶_________¶¶¶______¶¶______¶¶___¶¶____¶¶___¶¶
_____¶¶¶¶¶____________¶¶¶¶__________¶¶¶______¶¶_______¶¶¶___¶¶____¶¶____¶¶
¶¶¶¶¶_____________¶¶¶¶___________¶¶¶_______¶¶________¶¶____¶¶_____¶¶____¶¶

Curves and Thickness can also be a great way to show shape:
________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶_____________________________________¶¶_____
________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶____________________________________¶¶¶_______
_________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶__________________________________¶¶¶¶_________
__________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶____________________________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶___________
___________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶__________________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶_______________
_______________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶_____________________
_____________________¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶_____________________________

4. Shapes are a good start for beginners.
Here's a circle.

- Shading is a nice little technique that can make your picture look more realistic. Example:

_¶¶¶8¶84411_1_¶¶__
_¶¶¶8¶84411_1_¶¶__

Guide to Unalligned:

Welcome brave soul, to this quick guide on drawing unalligned ASCII Art, in this section you will learn:

- Basic Characters
- Curves and Angles
- Shading
- Signing your Artwork

Basic Characters

There are ALOT of different characters you can use to draw an ASCII picture with, most of which you will discover as time goes by. You will even form a sort of attachment to different characters, and this will become your style of drawing. For now though, lets go over some of the more commonly used characters:

¸ 0149
· 0183
• 0149
¬ 0172
´ 0180
ˆ 0136
˜ 0152
¨ 0168
¯ 0175

The codes you see to the right of them are called "ALT Codes" and are what code you must input into your NumPad whilst holding down the ALT key. When you release the ALT key, the corresponding character will appear in your drawing.

Curves and Angles

Here you see that I drew an angle using the characters from above and a few more just to form a nice line:

_ ¸ , . - · ~ ^ * ` ' ´ ` ˆ ˜ ¨ ¯

I can extend this line by adding another row of the same characters underneath it and by lining them up:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ._ ¸ , . - · ~ ^ * ` ' ´ ` ˆ ˜ ¨ ¯
_ ¸ , . - · ~ ^ * ` ' ´ ` ˆ ˜ ¨ ¯

As you can tell by where the 2 lines intersect; this line has 2 curves, and a corner.
You can get a more prominent corner by mixing up the characters and using more lines in the paragraph:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . ¸-;-¸
. . . . . . . . . . . ¸-´ . ; . `-¸
. . . . . . . . . ¸-´ . . . ; . . . `-¸
. . . . . . . ¸-´ . . . . . ; . . . . . `-¸
. . . . . ¸-´ . . . . . . . ; . . . . . . . `-¸
. . . . . .´¯¨˜ˆ´`'´*-, .; ,-*`'`´ˆ˜¨¯`
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . ',_,'

This pyramid has a nice corner at the top.

Shading

Using the same picture as before, lets practice a little shading!

Shading allow the ASCII Artist to give some depth to your creation. Be it a flat object with many sides, or a rounded object.
We shade using characters that take up more and more room of the 'Character Slot'.

Take for instance this comma: ,

It takes up less character space than this semicolon: ;

Characters that take up more 'Character space' will be the lighter side of the object. So if I put that into practice and shade my pyramid with the light coming from the left side of the page, it will look like this:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . ¸-;-¸
. . . . . . . . . . . ¸-´;;;... `-¸
. . . . . . . . . ¸-´;;;;;;;........`-¸
. . . . . . . ¸-´;;;;;;;;;;;...........`-¸
. . . . . ¸-´;;;;;;;;;;;;;;...............`-¸
. . . . . .´¯¨˜ˆ´`'´*-,;;..,-*`'`´ˆ˜¨¯`
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . ',_,'

See how one side is a lot lighter than the other? This shows that the object has 2 faces, thus includes some depth.

Signing your Artwork

As an ASCII Artist you will develop your skills and create some wonderful things. It is such a shame when somebody else comes along and copies your artwork claiming it as their own though. All that time and effort into creating a masterpiece only to have someone else take the credit.
This is where Signing your piece comes into play.

Remember:
The more difficult it is to put in your signature, that harder it will be to remove!

A hard signature to remove will deter more people from copying your artwork. But don't get too enthusiastic about how it looks, or it's size. Go too big and you'll take away from your masterpiece that you're signing.

Lets use my pyramid, and I'll sign that:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . ¸-;-¸
. . . . . . . . . . . ¸-´;;;... `-¸
Jàmëø50©'. . ¸-´;;;;;;;........`-¸
. . . . . . . ¸-´;;;;;;;;;;;...........`-¸
. . . . . ¸-´;;;;;;;;;;;;;;...............`-¸
. . . . . .´¯¨˜ˆ´`'`*-,;;..,-*`'`´ˆ˜¨¯`
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . ',_,'

As you can see, I chose to only take up one line for my signature. This would be an easy one to copy. But because the picture is quite small if I went any bigger I would take away from the piece. the bigger you pictures get, your signatures can follow.

Graduation!
Now you should have enough knowledge behind you in both Alligned and Unalligned ASCII Artworks to be able to create some marvellous pieces of Artwork.

Let's see some Magic! Let the Drawing Begin!
