Chapter 1 – Air Spells
Lokesh snapped awake. This was the second time he dozed off in class.
It wasn’t like it was easy to stay awake, his teacher, Ms. Harriet droned on and on about the movement of air.
Lokesh never understood why all them had to learn everything there was to learn about air. This was the magic school of Combat Academy, not the Science Academy. He loudly yawned and stretched back in his chair. Ms. Harriet hesitated in the middle of her explanation of the Northern Current of Gielinor and gave him an annoyed look. Lokesh didn’t feel bad, it was pretty much understood by all of his classmates (and his teachers) that Ms. Harriet was the most boring teacher in the entire academy. It wasn’t hard to understand why she was given the easiest and most boring of the elemental rune classes.
Out of habit, he looked around the room for anything remotely interesting. He didn’t see much, it was a typical wooden room with a few pictures of the gods and landscapes of the west. He was looking at picture of a huge tree with gnomes all around it when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. He quickly looked over to see what it was, and saw his best friend Mags looking at of him grinning. He grinned bad and raised his eyebrows at her. She glanced at Ms. Harriet and waited for her to face the other way then she put her arms up and waved them around in a ridiculous, but eerily accurate imitation of Ms. Harriet trying to depict air moving. Lokesh tried to silently laugh, but a loud snort came out anyways. Ms. Harriet whipped around and saw him laughing and then glanced over at Mags who was still waving her arms around, too committed to her performance to see Ms. Harriet looking directly at her.
“Mags! Ma-stop waving your arms around- Mags! What are you doing?” Mags froze her arms in midair and her eyes widened. She seemed to gain her composure pretty quickly and responded by shrugging.

Then she said, “Just doing my best to show how air moves Ms. Harriet” with a grin. Lokesh snorted again.
Ms. Harriet glanced at Lokesh and back at Mags, “Well maybe you should go show Mr. Oldman how air moves Mags, and you can go too Kesh”. That annoyed Lokesh, he didn’t like anyone but his friends to call him by his nickname, not that he had many anyways.
Mags and Kesh happily got out of their seats and made their way to the office. They both liked their principal, Mr. Oldman, and he liked them too. He took a shine to Mags as soon as she walked into the Academy, and it wasn’t hard to understand why. She was the top student at the Academy and no one was near her. Kesh was not nearly as gifted as her, in fact he was pretty close to the bottom of the class. Mags always joked that Mr. Oldman only ever felt bad for Kesh and really just wanted to keep Mags around because he once said that they were “joined at the hip”.
They walked down the hall trying to come up with ways Ms. Harriet could make her class even more boring. They had a few ideas that included complete silence, saying the word “air” over and over again, and making them watch her move air by only breathing the whole lesson until they came across the door to the principal. It was pretty obvious it was his door due to the blue parthat sign on it.
Kesh looked over at Mags and grinned, she grinned back. Mr. Oldman always let them off with a warning, they must have over a dozen in the few short months they have been at the Combat Academy.
As they walked into the office they were greeted with the familiar eccentric surroundings. There were pictures of… odd things. Sea monsters, a bank with willow trees in the background, and trolls. The desk was empty, and they saw the principal looking out the window to the left and narrating to a quill who was writing a letter. Kesh grinned at Mags who grinned back, Mr. Oldman was so cool.
He looked over at the two students, “Ah hello you two, back again I see. Take a seat”.

He dropped the runes he was using in a bowl in his desk, Kesh recognized law runes and air runes.
“Hey Mr. Oldman, was that telekinetic grab you were just using?” asked Kesh, he was well known for reading all about spells in the library that they weren’t studying.
“Very good Kesh, impressive knowledge you have acquired at my Academy.” His eye twinkled at Kesh, “What have you been up to on this fine day?”
Kesh looked over at Mags who nodded, Kesh grinned and looked back at Mr. Oldman, “We got a little carried away, er, demonstrating how air flowed through space sir.”
“Did you demonstrate in a manner similar to Ms. Harriet?”
“Yes sir”
“I assume the, uh, demonstration was performed well?”
Kesh grinned, Mr. Oldman was in a particularly good mood today, “Uncanny to the original performance in my opinion sir”. Mr. Oldman laughed.
“Well I think a performance that good shouldn’t be punished don’t you? No I think I can let you both off with a warning. I haven’t warned you yet have I?”
Kesh looked over at Mags, who grinned at Mr. Oldman. That was thirteen warnings and no punishments, not bad for the two mischiefs of the class.
“Now off you go, I have a letter to finish.” He plucked the air and law runes out of the bowl and wandered over to the window grabbing his blue parthat and saradomin staff along the way. He put on the hat and used the staff as a walking stick, leaning on it while reading to his quill, “I say again your majesty, I don’t care about any type of adventure causing havoc in your city, I will not assist quelling your rebellion. Mainly because I don’t want to, but it has been made obvious to me that there is a malevolent alliance between you, Lathas, and the elv-“
“Sir? Is that to King Lathas?” asked Mags, she looked less than happy. Mr. Oldman’s twinkle in his eye vanished.

“I like you Mags, and you Kesh, but there is a limit to my patience. I was foolish to start narrating while you two might still be in here. I suggest you both leave. Now.” Electricity danced around his staff, and the twinkle in his eye was replaced with a cold, calculating fury.
Kesh grabbed Mags by the elbow and made their way to the door. They had never had any other treatment than favoritism from their principal, it was scary. “I guess we know why people fear him now huh? Why did you push it like that?”
“Don’t blame me! You’re the one who was taking all the credit. He thought you were the one who did something funny when it was me all along!” said Mags. Kesh felt a twinge of annoyance, Mags did not like losing something she thought she earned.
“Well let’s not do that again, he has the highest combat level of anyone we know, he could vaporize us in a heartbeat.”
“Hmmph, fine” said Mags. She was quiet on the way back from the office. Kesh broke the silence when they saw their classmates walking out of the Air Classroom.
“Excellent, that boring class is out.”
“Yeah hopefully the next class is more fun”. Kesh hesitated, he knew that the next class was Mags least favorite class, even less than Air.
“Uh, I think our next lesson is Defence Mags” Mags closed her eyes and groaned.
