>!< Ancient histories, dated before even the God Wars, tell of powerful warriors of Guthix, known as Balancers. Whenever the balance of Gielinor is shifted too much, whether for good or for evil, these Balancers are taken from the Earth, and to the Heavens, where they are trained by Guthix to restore the balance. >!<

The story is 189 story-posts right now.

Hello, I'm Sigurdur130, but YOU can call me Siig ;)
Ok, this is a repost of my first story of the same title, which got 2k posts and died, with over 100 story posts. Not too shabby for the first story. I'm rewriting it, and hope to make it even better than before. ENJOY!
I wont bother with a table of contents, simply becouse I never update it anyway, and it's all in one place.
Joppi also came up with a specialized bump for me : Bust.
Bump
up
Siig's
thread.
Use it, or suffer the consequences.

Dedications: I dedicate this story to all my readers, but primarily Joppi J, he's been with it since the beginning of the first post, and without him this would have died numerous times, and I would have quit numerous times.
I also dedicate this to Xen, though some of you may know him as Slay1820. He edited the story after the first post got 2k, and made it so much better.
Also, a new edition to this list, Star Man. He's...an insane bumper, and has kept this alive even though I've pretty much left the forum. Give it up to him!
Same for Smurf Black. Crazy-as-boots, but bumps this every day :P

Prologue.

The scorched plains of the Wilderness are usually the very incarnation of death. A desert of nothingness, where hope is diminished, heat is drawn from ones very bones, and no creature draws breathe except the foulest beast. Yet there is life, albeit commonly mixed with death, in these icy plains to the north.

In one of the less deadly areas of the Wilderness, there is a battle. At first sight, it would seem to be imbalanced; fifteen burly warriors, each armored too their teeth, surrounding a single fighter, small and skinny, wearing nothing but simple traveling clothes. Yet it turns to be the opposite; the single fighter, slaughtering the warriors.

Looking even closer, one would see the bodies of five of their companions, already dead before the courageous onslaught of the fighter. On a hill not far away, a mage, clad in white robes, raised his staff towards the sky. Instantly, a white lightning fell from the sky, a good ten feet away from the battling warriors. The outlines of a large wolf appeared, and in less than a second, the wolf materialized. It was white as snow, and as it bared its teeth in a snarl, it became as threatening as a knife to the throat. It jumped towards the fight, but was instantly shot down from an arrow to its neck. It froze up, and turned white as a sheet, before it shattered like glass.

Yet three more lightings fell from the sky, never failing to create a wolf. They didn’t go to aid the fighter, or the warriors, but hindered their escape from the fighter.

It was as if gravity had no control over him, and he jumped around, kicking and punching the warriors around him, usually killing or mortally wounding with the latter. He dodged left from a battleaxe with uncanny speed, and immediately ducked to avoid a longsword, coming from a different foe. As he sprung up, he punched upwards against an unprotected head. The hot blood squirted on his face, and the man screamed in agony from the fire-red claws inside his jaw.

The fighter was a speeding whirlwind of destruction, and his enemies were using all their strength to simply stay alive.

He was slashing away in the midst of his opponents, yet he didn’t seem to be focused on the fight at all. That did not show in his speed, skill or strength, however, as he continued to fight as before, but his expression became distant.

He was thinking about what had happened so long ago, and what had happened since then without his knowledge…

End of prologue.

Chapter one – Into the Wilderness

Darkness, total darkness. A distant shout on the edge of his hearing caught Kashan’s attention, though he couldn’t focus on it.

“Kashan!”

Kashan ignored it.

“Kashan!” the voice shouted again, growing stronger, “Kashan, wake up!”

A sudden sound caught his attention, and he opened his eyes. Before him was a wooden ceiling. He stared at it for a couple of seconds while his eyes adjusted to the light, which poured through his window, but then the sound came again. This time he noted the cause; a small pebble clashed against the window, accompanying the sun’s rays.

He stepped out of the bed, and stumbled towards the window. He stuck his head out, and the light that met him blinded him for a few seconds.

When he regained his vision, he spotted a tall man outside. He was wearing full armor of solid steel, but his short, brown hair was free in the sun. In his hand, he held a pebble, ready for throwing.
He lowered it as he saw Kashan’s face in the window, though. He seemed to be around nineteen, the same age as Kashan, with eyes as brown as his hair. His thick bulk made him appear as if he were a fremennik, a notion only supported by the large, steel battleaxe in his right hand, and his great height.

Kashan was slightly surprised to see his friend fully armed, but decided not to comment on it. “What, Roan?” he yelled out the window.

“How do you sleep so much, it’s noon already!” Roan yelled back, apparently amused at Kashan’s tired appearance.

Kashan rolled his eyes. “Roan, what do you want?”

Roan shifted his weight before answering. “Come down, we’ll talk down here.”

Kashan sighed, and looked back at the inviting bed. “Okay, I’m coming!” he answered after a second of thought. He turned to leave, but Roan yelled again.

“Hey Kashan, grab your claws with you!” Kashan was bemused, but didn’t show it.

He got dressed, and ran downstairs. On his way out of the house, he grabbed the remnants of last night’s meal from the dining room table, and his steel claws from the weapon rack. The rack didn’t hold many weapons any more, at least not useable ones; only shields and swords of great heroes from the past. Then he stumbled on his little brother, Timier, running around the house with his wooden practice sword.

Most youngsters in Edgeville were trained in the basis of combat, in one way or the other, as being the outpost of civilization and a small town on the verge of the Wilderness often jeopardized its citizens. Timier was being trained in the use of a sword, as opposed to the swift claws Kashan had received his training with, or the battleaxe Roan had been trained in the use of.

He was only ten years old, nine years younger than Kashan, 4’5, with brown hair and a haircut similar to Kashan’*. His face features were soft, and he had big brown eyes that made him look as if he were the very incarnation of innocence. He was wearing thick fur, much too thick to wear in this weather, but Kashan knew he would change soon.

“Whoa, slow down little man” Kashan said kindly.

“Hey Kash, I’m going to my sword lesson! Today we learn how to counter-attack!” Timier exclaimed with a wide smile on his face, as he swung his sword in a wide, clumsy arch.

Kashan couldn’t resist smiling at his enthusiasm, his greatest hope was to become a knight of Ardougne, even though nobody had had the heart to tell him you had to be from Ardougne for that.

“Well you have fun; I’m going out with Roan. When you see mom, can you tell her where I went?” he asked his little brother kindly. He could guess the answer before it came, solely on the expression on Timier’s face.

“Oh, can I come with you?” Timier immediately asked hopeful.

Kashan chuckled. “Didn’t you just say you had a sword lesson?”

Timier’* expression darkened. “Oh. Well, okay, you have fun, though,” he said sadly, and scurried off.

When Kashan came out, Roan immediately confronted him.

“Hey man, Ellya and I are going to the Wilderness, do some exploring; do you want to come?” he asked, and then added as he saw the look of doubt on Kashan’s face, *Krystal’s already said she’d come, we just have to go get her.”
Kashan sighed deeply, and replied. “Fine, but we’re NOT going further in than so we always keep the town in view.”

“Of course we won’t,” Roan replied, “this isn’t a suicide mission.”

Kashan seemed satisfied with that, and they walked to Ellya’s house, to find Ellya sitting on the steps outside, supporting her head with her hands in boredom. When they came in view, she yelled at them, “What took you so long! Roan, you went to get him half an hour ago!”

Ellya was very short, only 5*1, but her blue robes and her staff of water signified her as a strong mage. Her red hair flowed down to her hip like a waterfall, and her brown eyes seemed like two pools of power. She was one of the few in Edgeville who showed aptitude in the use of magic, and although she wouldn’t be considered powerful on a world-scale, she was strong enough to fend off most attackers.

“Sorry, it’s not easy to wake up a slowpoke like him.” Roan said comically, shrugging.

Kashan blushed awkwardly, but it seemed to go unnoticed by Roan and Ellya.

“Whatever. Let’s go,” Ellya said, as she stood up, suddenly not caring.

“Wait, we have to go get Krystal” Kashan said, almost alarmed.

Ellya sighed. “Fine, go get her. Meet us back here.” Kashan ran off to Krystal’s house, as Ellya sat back down, bored again, now joined by Roan.

When Kashan reached Krystal’s house, he saw her in the backyard facing the other way, picking some apples from a tree.

“Hey you.” she suddenly said, without even stopping her work. Even though Kashan was sure she couldn’t see him from this angle, and most certainly couldn’t hear him from this distance, he wasn’t very surprised, it wasn’t the first time she had done something like this.

By now, he was standing right besides her, savoring the moment and the smell of fresh apples combined with her perfume.

“How did you know this time”? He asked as his lips gently brushed hers.

“The apple, it reflects if it’s in prime condition, you know,” she said, showing him the apple in her hands, and, sure enough, he could see his distorted reflection, just before she took a big bite out of it.

“Clever,” he said with acknowledgement in his voice, but then became serious. “So, Roan told me you’re coming to ‘explore’ the Wilderness?” he stated rather than asked.

“Yeah, it’s going to be fun,” she replied gleefully, then seemed to scan down his arms, and said, “I see Roan told you to grab the claws, good thing; you never know what’s in there. I’ll come in a minute, just give me a moment to fetch my bow and some arrows.”

Krystal was ready after a minute, as she had promised, and together they walked to Ellya’s house.
They reached it shortly, and after a moment of last-second preparations, they all started venturing north, towards the Wilderness, oblivious to the little brown eyes following them the whole way.

End of Chapter 1
