The Paladin did not halt his efforts, and continued to remove tent stakes and take down the wooden support rods. “I have my orders, Kerick. As do you. As does Tobin.” The Paladin motioned towards the ranger who was busy taking down his own tent.
“I understand this, Paladin. But how long does Lathas expect us to conduct our search, out here in this wasteland?” Kerick probed, clearly irritated with the Paladin’s response.
“His Majesty the King, Lathas, expects us to complete our mission no matter the cost. That was in the manuscript that I received, and I am completely certain that those exact words were written in your own conscription orders.” The Paladin replied.
“I am here…because I was told there would be a reward for the completion of this quest. What good is a reward if I am not alive to make use of it?” Kerrick went on.
The Paladin showed much restraint. He sighed, and stowed the tent stakes and tent rods in his pack. Tobin trailed quickly behind, silently packing up his own tent.
Then the Paladin met Kerick’s gaze and locked eyes. “You are here to complete a task assigned by His Majesty the King, and you will complete it. Is that understood?”
“Yes.” Kerick muttered, in resignation.
The Paladin fastened his pack to his back and then placed his hand on Kerrick’s shoulder. “Just do your job. If you can do that, I promise you that this will all work out. Now go pack up your tent.”
