He knelt down, his armored knees digging into the scorched earth. With one hand he took a handful of loose gravel and dust and slapped his hands together. He would do this every morning, just before sunrise. Although, he knew, the sunlight would not greet him on this particular morning. He continued to stare out into the vast expanse of the Wilderness, an area of land that seemed to be wrought by neither night nor day.

Go in peace in the name of Saradomin; may his glory shine upon you like the sun.
He prayed. When his prayer was finished, the man kissed the four-pointed star shaped pendant around his neck and stood up.

“Paladin.”

The man turned around to see his companions, a mage and a ranger, approach him from the campfire.

“You two are finally up! Good, let’s pack up camp and get moving. We must make haste in our journey.” The Paladin walked past the two companions and began to tear down the tents.

“Paladin…” The mage asserted once more, though fatigued.

“Yes, Kerick?” The paladin responded, almost passively, as he removed a tent stake from the ground.

“How much longer must we carry on with this charade? It has been three stinking days. I fear that the longer we stay out here, the risk increases that we will succumb to the dangers of this land and have nothing to show for our troubles.”

The Paladin did not halt his efforts, and continued to remove tent stakes and take down the wooden support rods. “I have my orders, Kerick. As do you. As does Tobin.” The Paladin motioned towards the ranger who was busy taking down his own tent.

“I understand this, Paladin. But how long does Lathas expect us to conduct our search, out here in this wasteland?” Kerick probed, clearly irritated with the Paladin’s response.

“His Majesty the King, Lathas, expects us to complete our mission no matter the cost. That was in the manuscript that I received, and I am completely certain that those exact words were written in your own conscription orders.” The Paladin replied.

“I am here…because I was told there would be a reward for the completion of this quest. What good is a reward if I am not alive to make use of it?” Kerrick went on.

The Paladin showed much restraint. He sighed, and stowed the tent stakes and tent rods in his pack. Tobin trailed quickly behind, silently packing up his own tent.

Then the Paladin met Kerick’s gaze and locked eyes. “You are here to complete a task assigned by His Majesty the King, and you will complete it. Is that understood?”

“Yes.” Kerick muttered, in resignation.

The Paladin fastened his pack to his back and then placed his hand on Kerrick’s shoulder. “Just do your job. If you can do that, I promise you that this will all work out. Now go pack up your tent.”
