Introduction

BANG!

...

BANG!

The halls of the castle echoed as the battering ram slammed against the door. Inside the main hall, the throne room, the King stood in front of his throne. Surrounding him were two dozen of the elite Royal Guard, and surrounding them were a few more dozen soldiers. Many of them had minor injuries, were exhausted, or both, having just taken part in a violent, bloody, doomed fight at the city gates. Everyone in the room wore a look of either determination, resignation, or terror.

BANG!

"Your Majesty..." The head of the Royal Guard began. "We really should get you out of here... the secret-"

"Enough!" King Aaron silenced him. Standing at 5' 10" with long dark brown hair and a goatee, a golden bejeweled crown, and gold ceremonial armor, he was an imposing sight. "Even if we escape, then what? Our neighbors have all either turned against us or made it clear they weren't going to aid us! I will go down fighting, and-"

BANG!

"Ahem, I will go down fighting, and I will become a martyr. A symbol for the people to rally behind." The determination in his voice faded slightly as he spoke his next words. "That's the only use I am now..." For the past year he had to watch his nation's borders shrink bit by bit every day, the enemy gaining more ground. Each report only brought news of how many men were lost, what villages were destroyed, and what the enemy had gained.

BANG!

The door splintered, and was starting to give way. "Into formation!" The captain of the Royal Guard ordered. Every soldier and guard present brought their shields up and had their spears and swords at the ready, seemingly prepared to fight to the last man. Of course, some may have other motives. Not every man was willing to die for their country.

BANG!

Finally, the doors gave way, flying open, as hundreds of soldiers surged in, with thousands more outside. The dreaded Tarran Army, the soldiers who had plagued their lands for over a year now. No doubt they had plundered and pillaged their way through the city to get here.

"Fight to the last man! Charge!" The king commanded, and his own small army surged forward. The two forces met each other head on, and what would one day be known as King Aaron's Last Stand began.

-----

Summary

Right then, this is The Last Stand. It's not going to be a very long thread. If you remember my Orcish Raid thread (if you've only ever been on the story forum than you probably don't), this is going to be something like that - probably even shorter. And you're only on one side of the conflict this time.

You can be either one of the Royal Guards or one of the soldiers. Your motivations for joining the Royal Guard or the military are your own, but with the war nearing it's end do you plan to fight to the death or betray your king and hope to earn some brownie points with the invading army?

The Garan-Tarran War

I'm unoriginal as hell and I re-use names. I get it.

Anyways, the Kingdom of Gara was once the dominant nation on the continent. It controlled a good third of the continent's land mass, had the largest army, and everyone under it's rule prospered.

King Aaron decided that everyone else should prosper as well, and so he made his already large army even larger invaded the Kingdom of Tarra. At first he was successful, but then Tarra appealed to the other nations for help. And though the Tarrans were not well liked, the other kingdoms had grown wary of Gara's increased expansion and position of power, and they banded together to form a fighting force that could rival Gara's.

For three years the war was a stalemate, neither side gaining ground that wasn't immediately recaptured or at the cost of losing some of their own land, and both suffered equal losses.

But then one of the King's generals on the Tarran front came up with an ambitious plan that could turn the tide of the war but at great risk. Not wanting the war to drag on further, the King consented, and the plan backfired. It soon became the bloodiest battle in the war, the Garans losing thousands of soldiers that could not be replaced.

The Tarrans immediately staged a counter attack and broke through enemy lines. Soldiers then had to be reassigned from the other fronts to halt their attack, which then led to the Garans losing on those fronts as well. Over the course of a year, the kingdom was gradually swallowed up, and now the Tarrans are on their doorstep.

The Royal Guard

The Royal Guard are supposed to be some of the most elite fighters in the entire kingdom. They do protect the king, after all. They recruit well-known and highly skilled fighters from both the City Guard and the Military. Their armor consists of heavy steel plate with full face helmets, the armor itself having a nice gilded trim to it. For weaponry they have a round steel shield, a halberd or spear, and a longsword.

The Garan Military

The footsoldiers of Gara. Everyday citizens who: a) want to serve their country, b) desperately need a job, or c) have nothing to lose, have decided to join the military. Some of them are fresh faced rookies while others are battle-hardened veterans. These days, it is mostly the latter - most of the army is either dead or taken prisoner.

The uniform consists of a suit of chainmail armor, an iron helmet, iron spaulders, iron gauntlets, iron greaves, iron knee guards, and leather boots. Melee fighters carry a round steel shield with a longsword as their primary weapon and a dagger as a back-up. Archers carry oak longbows with a shortsword as their back-up.

The Tarran Military

In order to create a force roughly equal to the Garans they were facing, the Tarrans had resorted to mass conscription. But they did not have the resources to outfit everyone with the same equipment. As a result you have two different footsoldiers: the volunteers and the conscripts, the volunteers being better equipped for actually wanting to be there.

The volunteers' armor consists of thin iron plate from head to toe, with a square iron shield and a steel longsword. The conscripts have less equipment - hardened leather, with an iron helmet, iron gauntlets, and iron greaves. They carry round wooden shields wrapped in leather and their weapons may vary - swords, axes, maces, all of either iron or steel quality.
