This is the tale of Kanjarg the Smith.
In early 2004 I created a character called Kanjarg. I said he was going to be a miner/smith who never died, and he never did (a very early hard core character!).He got 99 mining and smithing in an age when there was no make-x at a furnace, there was no GE, Blast furnace or assist. Getting ores meant a long mining session or trying to get a deal on the forums. Smithing XP rates were incredibly low. Anyway, eventually he got to rank 10 in smithing. I mined with many famous players in the Heroes' guild (once mining 50k runite). I got and wore the expert dragon archer hat. Kanjarg was rapidly going up the leader board and I had my sights set on rank 1! The morning the skill capes update came out, there were less than 50 smiths who had achieved 99 smithing at that point, I was very close to Thurgo and bought it within 1 minute! It is highly likely I was the first to ever wear the gold-trimmed smithing cape. But then the GE and the BF came out and instead of adapting and going with the new updates, I couldn't but help feel that all that painfully hard XP was made unfairly irrelevant and I retired the character; smithing xp rates having quite quickly gone from about 10k/hour to 350k/hour. This Kanjarg slipped into obscurity and oblivion.
Years later, I made a new character called i_kanjarg_i and set a new HCIM challenge - to become the rank 1 smith! I devised a cunning smithing system and picked up my smithing hammer once more. I got rank 1 in smithing! I got the expert dragon archer hat again. This character died killing dust devils in Kourend. I had full hit points and a protect prayer on, but for no reason the death screen came up and I lost my HCIM status!
I then made a FSW smith and got rank 1 in smithing again! For a double rank 1 in smithing. I've just made a ftp HCIM smith and if anyone wants to pop in and say hi, I may sometimes be found in the mining guild on world 501
