Catherby grapple tree/rock iss

I've been trying to use the short cut in catherby to the water oblelisk island and each time I do my character runs behind the tree and says something like "I can't see a good spot to grapple". Idk if I'm doing something wrong or if this action is just broken. Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
