It is truly disappointing that you cannot get pets from the event. I doubt it'll hit the 10m mark. No one will bother doing it for 13 days if they can't get pets. The xp is too little and it's too easy to get all the rewards with just a tiny bit of effort. More dead content.

I'm not going to complain about the XP rate, in my opinion this is mostly a fun little event that give some skins as a reward.

What I will complain about though, is the "running in circles" I doubt this has been tested on actual humans.
You can't look away, because you need to switch between clockwise and counter clockwise (who called it anti-clockwise?).
This makes your screen effectively move in circles all the time, which after just a few seconds starts to induce motion sickness. I tried it for 5 minutes, and just had to stop.
I never get these troubles from normal gameplay, but on this one it's just too much.

They are all around the main surface world. You can often find them near lodestones, and the event site.
