I don't quite understand how bonds work in regards to buying many of them. I think there is a limit of holding 20 of them? Can all 20 be used at the same time towards membership? Can I then buy 20 more, immediately afterwards, and stack those number of days on top of the previous 20 and so on? Is it possible to buy thousands of days of membership in one day by using 20 bonds in a repeated process or is there some kind of limit?
Are they not the same thing? I've read that bonds used in RuneScape also give membership to the OSRS account since the login is the same. I have been considering using RuneScape GP to buy bonds so I can play OSRS.
My question is mainly directed at RS3 because that is where I am considering buying the bonds with GP. I assume bonds work the same way for both RS and OSRS. I am a returning player who wants to play OSRS by funding it with my years of membership and hard work of my original RuneScape account.

Sorry for the confusions. Yes, membership in one version of the game applies to both versions.
I was confused by your discussion of the 20 bond limit, which is the limit of how many Old School Bonds can be store in a player's bond pouch in OSRS. In RS3, bonds are stored in the currency pouch up to a limit of 500.
As your concern is more about buying membership with bonds, I'll move your thread to the Community Led Payment Support Forum, as this is the best place to ask bout membership payment methods.
If redeeming Bonds for membership, they should be redeemed in groups of 3.
A group of 3 Bonds redeemed at once will give 45 days instead of 42 days.
The best deal is to save up 20 Bonds and use them to buy Premier Club 2021 when it goes on sale.
It costs 20 Bonds for Gold Premier which works out to approx 18 days membership per Bond, better than the group of 3 redemption.
You can only purchase one Bond per buying slot when buying them on the GE.
It would be a slow process to buy many Bonds. Also, beware of driving the price up if buying many in a short time.
I understand all that. What I'm asking about is if there is a limit to using them. Could I keep using bonds until I have years of membership days stacked up? Or can I only use a certain amount of bonds and then have to wait to use more?
There might be a limit on how much membership credit you can have on a single account, but you should have no issues redeeming at least 2 years' worth of bonds.
If you plan to redeem a large number of bonds, you may want to wait until the end-of-year Premier Club packages are available, which offer even better bulk discounts, as Malua says. But you can only purchase one Premier Club package per year.
