I had my kitten following me during the quest and went down to kill the guardian dog. After killing it I teleported out with my kitten still on the ground. Now it seems to be gone

Go to your 'Worn Equipment' tab and click the whistle ('Call Follower') button.

This will return your kitten back to you.
