The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
runescape-launcher : Depends: libssl1.1 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Cant seem to find the file to get this to work.

Seems like you are trying to follow Jagex's instructions to install the Linux client. Unfortunately Jagex doesn't keep the client package up to date. To work around this a Snap and Flatpak of the official client have been made by 3rd parties. The Snap which can be found at
https://snapcraft.io/runescape
seems to be the one that is maintained the most.

I experienced the same problem after a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Unfortunately, I'm very new to Linux so I wasn't sure how to resolve the issue in question.

Afterward, I installed RuneScape via James Carroll's snap package, but RuneScape immediately crashed to desktop on launch. :|

As a result, I switched back to Windows 10 until these problems get resolved or I guess until I choose another distro (i.e. Fedora 35, Fedora 36 beta, or Debian 11.3).

I guess if you're stuck with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and don't find a solution, you could always install Steam, enable Steam Play for all games (latest Proton stable), and install RuneScape through it until the official package gets updated.

The error you get can be fixed by downloading a package from an older distribution of ubuntu.

Package name for my architecture was: libssl1.1_1.1.1o-1_amd64.deb

http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl1.1_1.1.1o-1_amd64.deb is a direct link.

https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/libssl1.1/download is a list of mirrors you can pick from.

At the end of the day this would not happen if they had someone maintaining their repositories...

Downloading packages from other releases breaks the release you're on. That LibSSL will be pulled in by other applications, exposing them to ABI incompatibility and security issues, even if they're unrelated to RuneScape (e.g, Firefox, SSH, etc).

I know this might be an old Thread or something but still the No.1 on google search and the problem still exist and the solution is here:

add "deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security main " to your "/etc/apt/sources.list" file and you can install runescape like normal

I'm pretty new with linux...i've tryed the following lines but the response change to "Impossible to find runescape launcher package"

sudo -s -- << EOF
wget -O - https://content.runescape.com/downloads/ubuntu/runescape.gpg.key | apt-key add -
mkdir -p /etc/apt/sources.list.d
echo "deb https://content.runescape.com/downloads/ubuntu trusty non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/runescape.list
echo "deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/runescape.list
apt-get update
apt-get install -y runescape-launcher
EOF

Jagex doesn't have to support Ubuntu if they help out the proton steam experimental way of running a exe natively on Ubuntu 23/22 through steam.

I want to play RS3 on Ubuntu 23. How do I do that?
I get "runescape-launcher depends on libssl1.1 but libssl1.1 is uninstallable"
To fix this-

I downloaded the package myself into my download folder-
https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/libssl1.1/download
I installed it
sudo dpkg -i (your specific path here)/Downloads/libssl1.1_1.1.1o-1_amd64.deb

And then RuneScape 's directions worked finally. Although, I found I was unable to use my jagex launcher created character on the RuneScape app for some reason? Unable to login via Google or anything as it directed me to some"third party login" page that said use the runescape launcher dummy.

So to use my account... I installed steam, and went through the steam settings to find an experimental way to play it via "Proton".
After changing steam to use the latest experimental version I can play and have downloaded RuneScape on a Old windows PC converted to use Ubuntu OS 23. with the steam snap package on their software section.

After connecting my runescape account to my steam account, steam auto magically logged me into my runescape letting me use my account :) good luck.
