Can't import steam character

IO can't link my steam character to my jagex account

When i log into the jagex site using my steam i see the character i want to link
i click start and log into my jagex account, but then i get redirected to my characters page and see that my steam account is not linked. tried it mutiple times but same thing happens every time. what am i doing wrong?

Btw when I click the import existing button on the characters page I don't get the option to login with steam so I can't import it like that either.

Have you ever set a login email to your Steam account? Or, have you only ever logged into it through Steam?

I suspect you need to add a login email to the Steam account before it will appear on your list of 'import existing' accounts.
