I've having quite a frustrating time when it comes to my Jagex account. Whenever I have my VPN on and open the launcher, I get told I'll be logged out and need to log back in. Whenever I try to open the app again, it says I'm blocked and to try again later. Disabling the VPN allows me to sign in fine, albeit with getting yet another email with an authentication code.

I would assume this happens because the IP of the VPN is getting blocked, but that can't be the case. This has been happening for quite a while now, but I've finally gotten to point where I decided I wanted to make a post about it. When I went to sign in, I was also initially blocked. Turning the VPN off and on again didn't work. But switching the VPN to a new location and back again did. I made sure the "testing" server was the same every time, so I'm super confused as to why it was initially blocked, but then became unblocked for no apparent reason.

When this first happened, I tried setting up split tunneling so that the VPN wouldn't affect anything, but allowing it to be bypassed on both the launcher and Runlite client did not help, nor did bypassing each one individually.

I just want to find some solution to this so I don't have to consistently deal with screwing around with my computers settings along with getting my email flooded.

A VPN is a '
3rd party network of sorts
' and not all those networks are trustworthy nor safe therefore Jagex is able to block a VPN based upon their knowledge/experience with said VPN.

Direct contact with '
Jagex's Servers
' provides the best experience you might experience with no issues at all.
The email you get is a safeguard-message that your account is used to login on '
Jagex's Servers
' and the autentication code is there to make sure only said owner/creator is able to login regardless knowledge about your emails/email-account.
If you keep those separate from each other.

I'm well aware of what a VPN is. I don't think Jagex is blocking VPNs based off of whether or not they are trustworthy considering a mod in another thread directly recommended NordVPN, something they wouldn't do if they were worried about "trustworthy" VPNs. The VPN I'm currently using is about as trustworthy as you can get without hosting your own (something I plan on setting up shortly). I'm also aware of why I'm getting the emails. However, I simply do not need nor want the extra security. This is a medieval point and click game, not my bank. If my account gets hacked somehow (which is unlikely considering the main method of attack tends to be social engineering), then I am more than fine with losing it. I should have the option to disable 2FA if I desire.

This is something that is incredibly frustrating because VPNs have been specifically asked about in the past, and they have been given a green light time and time again by Jagex employees. Has this company position changed? Or can they put some setting in their launcher that allow more technical users to disable some "features" to allow more seamless use with a VPN.

Hey, JayyCob.

There is nothing malicious nor against the rules in using a reputable VPN to play RuneScape; however, there are two potential issues that you may come across if you embark on this path:

1) You may be flagged for rule-breaking IF you utilize a VPN that's known to be used by rule-breakers. This means that it's highly recommended to do some research on VPNs to ensure that you don't get mislabeled as a rule-breaker. Usually, the free VPNs are the ones that cause an issue, but always make sure before you continue. You should consider using a paid VPN service to avoid such conflicts.

2) Your digital record with Jagex may be non-existent . This means that if you EVER have to recover your account -- for whatever reason(s) -- it may be impossible to do so as VPNs do not allow Jagex to create nor maintain a digital record of your account. With that being said, ensure that your account is completely secured -- See Security tips -- to avoid the possibility of ever having to try to recover your account.

Other than the above, as long as you are careful, your gameplay shouldn't be affected :) .
