Can't redeem Key Token

I have read that I can have up to 100 "earned" Treasure Hunter keys stockpiled. Right now, I have 10. When I mouse over my Treasure Hunter keys, the 10 appears in red.

I received a Key Token from killing Klawdia and was not able to redeem it without using a Treasure Hunter key. What gives? Can I have 100 keys or not?

I can't bank the Key Token, so I have to use a Treasure Hunter key or destroy the Token.

If you get a key from turning in a daily challenge, it will keep adding to your total above 10. But when you get a token after you have reached 10, then you need to use some up to get down to 9 in order to redeem the token.

It's just Jagex's way to deter players from hoarding keys and waiting for an event that they like.

Hey Aqrnicus.

I destroy key tokens all the time.
I don't really need 500 more air runes that badly.

So if you just use your daily spins, the others save up until 100.
I like keeping my total near 100 for good promos.

Ye it seems like a waste at first to destroy those key tokens, but it's allowed me to get all the skilling outfits when they came out.

So if you have a reason to save those spins up, you get used to destroying those key tokens.
I don't even think about it anymore, it isn't a thing to me.
I've gained so much more by having 100 spins for good promos than I could have got from random keys.

You must be below 10 earned keys before you can redeem a key token. Earned keys also come from daily challenges and quests, so the actual hard limit on earned keys is 100. As has been said, the limits are to keep you from storing too many while you wait for a worthwhile promotion. You also can't bank the tokens (which means you can't use bank presets) for the same reason.
