The glass shards go directly to the window that matches their color. When a window is complete, you'll be prompted to click on it to receive the Window Rewards

you can just spam opening chests it'll prevent you if you have a window to open Buy Zemomarks / Chromatic Partyhats safely here

When you get a shard the window that it goes to has a white glow to it. You can click that window to check how many more shards before you can open that window. I was confused at first as well but I got it after a few keys.
