I'm a religious studies minor, so folklore is something that fascinates me. Jagex has proven time and time again that they have similar interests! From some of the smaller lore to the very religious faction wars.

I vaguely remember reading a Taoist myth as a part of a Eastern Folklore class. I had to google it as soon as I saw that there was going to be a boss called Seiryu. You see, in a few Eastern cultures there's folklore surrounding 4 mythical beasts. A black turtle in the north,
Edit:
qilin a white tiger in the west, a phoenix-type beast in the south, and... an azure dragon in the East. And a Qilin/Unicorn/Chimera in the Center.

We have a hint at which the next Elite Dungeon boss could be. He talks about a similarly corrupted being in the Wilderness. North. If we're going by the same language as Aminishi (Japanese), our best guess would be that we might be meeting a giant black turtle named Genbu . Perhaps the same race as Valluta.

Edit:
Qilin in the West Center. The qilin's Japanese name is Kirin. Does that sound familiar? It should! The premiere club pet Kirin matches the qilin description. That leads me to believe the real Kirin's gone, for whatever reason. Or maybe... dun dun dun... is Xau-Tak!

Edit:
A white tiger in the west. Would be named Byakko if keeping with Japanese linguistics.

It is very possible that we've met the Phoenix in the South before. Some myths describe it as being phoenix-like, rather than literally a phoenix. My first thought went to Sunfreet. But that would require them to retcon him into that lore. We also know there is the desert phoenix we pluck feathers from for quests and Antifire(3)s. The Japanese name is really familiar to anyone who plays Pokemon, Ho-oh. So likely something else. Maybe the Arabic name for Phoenix, because of the Kharidian influence?

**Thankyou to RoninOctopus for the correction about Kirin/Byakko .

I too am excited to see the Four Gods show up in Runescape. However, I think that if encounter one in the West, it would be based on the White Tiger Byakko. The Kirin is a fifth animal who stands in the center.

Its nice to meet a fellow lover of mythology, by the way~! :)

You're right. My mistake. That class was about 8 years ago. I mostly remember the Phoenix because I like Pokemon & Qilin because WoW bases a creature off them. (Hooray for mnemonic devices)

My love of eclectic myth/culture based lore is one reason why I've stayed with Runescape for so long. The click intensive grinding gameplay isn't what hooked me. Certain J-Mods MUST have similar passions. There are some obscure references embedded in Runescape lore. At least for this one, there are anime spinoffs already. So maybe just a weeb. Heh.

This was a fascinating read!! Let's see if any of these predictions turn out to be correct... (I hope they do!)
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.

If I’m not mistaken, Seiryu is one of four mystical beings that reside in the Wushanko. The four of them are all mentioned in the text for joint voyages in ports and one of the others is a turtle. So that would mean this is unlikely, as the Muth did inspire Seiryu but the four beings are all specific to the arc. I’m not sure though and can’t find sources.

They're all in the East. None of them are in the West.

If you read Seiryu's dialogue here:

Then this:

Then the murals:

Everyone seems to think that the boss is going to be the Ambassador. The only reason that it seems Seiryu was affected, was due to being water-based.

These dungeons are all based around Xau-Tak.

Im not sure being connected to water is a requirement for Xau tainting. After all, the cave goblin in the afterlife becomes temporarily possessed by some Xau thing. Read Kuroryu's pet dialogue....it's very interesting.
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.
