The small temple/shrine that lies just above the original God Wars Dungeon. What do we know about it? Who was it built for, who was it built by, and why are there wisps floating around on the belltower? (or is that even a belltower)?
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

According to 'The Praesul,' Nex was imprisoned in her palace.

According to Ashuelot Reis, Saradominists lured Nex into icy caverns and then built a massive temple around her prison.

All things considered, I'm more inclined to believe Nex's personal musings over what sounds like Saradominist propaganda. As such, I'm led to believe that the temple of the GWD and, in fact most structures within the God Wars Dungeon are actually the remnants of Nex's Palace.

"How strange also to have spent so long trapped in a temple built unknowingly atop this place , held merely a score of places from my sanctum. But no matter. The rebellion and war are ancient history now, as recent as they still seems to me."

- The Praesul

Seems pretty clear that the temple we know as the GWD is Saradominist, while Nex's actual palace was the Angel of Death area deeper within the caverns.

I have noticed your kind does tend to blindly stumble forward towards danger simply because it exists. What is your word for that?
- We call it being a hero.

I actually think this is correct, or COULD be made to be correct--Cannon. I really like this idea. The thought that the four gods (Bandos, Zamorak, Saradomin and that flying rodant) converged on Zaros' camp is really rich in opportunity.

I mean, maybe Nex/Zaros' forces managed to collect the pieces/a piece of the godsword and all the other gods came to claim those pieces and got frozen under? It makes sense that the crescendo of the godwars to end like this. Zaros' forces managed to attain all the godsword pieces and the other gods rushed to claim them back for their own, respective, reasons. Each of the four gods managed to grab a piece/pieces for their own and continue to fight over the other pieces.

Happy Hunting,

-Bandos.
Though our god fallen, our brothers and sisters scattered... ready we remain; for one more battle.

LONG LIVE THE BIG HIGH WAR GOD!

You seem to have misunderstood me and missed the bit where I was corrected and accepted said correction.

Their is no denying that Nex's Forces in the GWD reside in the remnants of her palace. During the battle for the Ritual Site (early 3rd age), Nex and her forces ended up back in her palace (maybe pushed back by the Saradomin-Zamorak alliance, maybe it was their base of operations and they were planning for battle, who knows), where a spell was cast to imprison them in stasis.

At some point, a temple was built on top of Nex's prison (I assume by Saradominists since they tended to do that with Zarosian structures).

Later in the 3rd age, Saradomin, Bandos, and Armadyl ally to defeat Zamorak and commission the god sword as a tool to defeat him. A group of aviansie ended up transporting the finished god sword blade, but they were ambushed en route by Zamorakian forces. The Aviansie retreated to the Temple built atop Nex's prison whilst under pursuit by Zamorakian forces. There, they received reinforcements from Saradominist and Bandosian forces before the situation deteriorated.

Bandosian forces set about attacking every side. Saradominist forces attempted and failed to seize the blade from Armadylian forces during the chaos. As a result all alliances fell apart in the battle. Zilyana attempted to take advantage of mind-control and mind manipulating amulets that appeared on her altar to Saradomin, which led to an ill-fated attack by Armadylian forces against them. One aviansie killed as a result of this attack begged Kree-arra in a letter written as he lay dying to wield the god sword against the other factions.

Though not stated anywhere, I find it fairly likely that Kree did attempt to wield the god sword against the other factions, and it was during this attack that the blade was shattered and scattered amongst the factions (who then fabricated forgeries to better protect the true pieces).

During all this fighting, Sliske presented himself to a group of Saradominists including one Ashuelot Reis. He claimed to know of a ritual to awaken Guthix so that he could end the God Wars. Ashuelot and her group defected from Saradomin and learned 'Guthixian' ways from Sliske.

Sliske eventually led the group to the battle in the GWD under the guise of performing the Ritual to awaken Guthix. Upon performing the ritual, however, it was not Guthix but Nex and her forces who awoke. Nex wrecked havoc across all other sides, until they banded together and drove Nex back into her prison, sealing it with a key that they split across the factions present so she could not be released again. After which, they resumed their battle with each other for the god sword.

The dungeon was later frozen over by Aeternam and Guthix at the end of the God Wars, only to be later thawed out during the 5th age. The current whereabouts of the true pieces of the godsword are unknown. Perhaps Nex's forces claimed them when they initially escaped. Perhaps they were destroyed. Perhaps they were secreted away from the dungeon at some point in the past. All we really know is that the one we the players can use is not the true sword.

Temple of Lost Ancients built atop Nex' Palace.

Built by Saradominists for... Idr why exactly. Lost ancients=lost Zarosians? Idk. An outer shell, probably, to provide a bottleneck to push them into, should it be needed.

There are wisps around a belltower?

Saradominists have a habit of building things on top of Zarosian things. Saranthium hurriedly built to cover up the ruins of Senntisten, for instance.

A Saradominist temple being built "unknowingly" on top of Nex's palace seems like too much of a coincidence to be unintentional. Hiding remnants of the Zarosian past by covering them up with Saradominism.
