At the entrance to Shattered Worlds, Kenton Decarte tells you:
Original message details are unavailable.
Teleportation magic momentarily pierces the abyss, allowing anima from different worlds to leak in. Over time, this anima has coalesced into twisted amalgams of worlds travellers have visited.
Anima leaking into the Abyss. Sound familiar? Xenia's plan in Heart of Stone was to siphon all of Gielinor's anima into the Abyss, and though she didn't manage to complete the task, Ariane makes it clear that it wasn't prevented entirely either:
Original message details are unavailable.
We weren't able to stop her siphoning some of the Anima Mundi into the Abyss. I don't know what effect that will have, but the abyssal creature we fought implied that it had already started waking the elder gods. If that's the case, we're all in trouble.
Apart from the effect on the Elder Gods, this could well be another of the results of Xenia's scheme. Kenton Decarte's explanation purely focuses on anima built up from teleportation over time, but what Xenia did seems altogether far too similar to not have something to do with it as well.
There's timing to be considered, too. As said, this has been building up for years and years, but Xenia's sudden and
deliberate
influx of anima could have been the catalyst required to turn this into minigame material.
Thoughts? Shattered Worlds lore intrigues me, I'd love to see more of it.

interesting, would be very worthwhile to incorporate SW into a future Elder/Abyss-related quest
Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.
