Speculation time!

My thoughts are under the assumption that the Gemstone Dragons were an experiment by a Dragonkin as dragons typically are.
I wonder what the Dragonkin who created them had on mind before beginning the experiment.

First thing that comes to mind is that gems appear to have a notable tendancy of being able to be enchanted, an ability to hold/be affected by a greater amount of magic than other items.

Perhaps these were an experiment for creating dragons that could grasp a much larger hold on magic than most other regular dragons, possibly being able to further enhance these types of dragons with magic that would be ineffective on regular-scaled or metal-scaled dragons.

Now onto the location, it is a cave within Karamja, and it's not unlikely that more Dragonkin experiments took place since the Brimhaven Dungeon upon the same island is a known place of previous Dragonkin residence.

Within the cave the dragons are surrounded by a vast amount of natural gems, a perfect place to experiment with the crystals. It would make sense that somewhere in the cave there could be a hidden area which a Dragonkin's experiments took place, with the living experimental gemstone dragons placed outside in the area which we can access potentially acting as protection from any 'explorative' guests.

Any other thoughts on this?

I had a look at the map of Brimhaven Dungeon and compared it with Karamja on the surface above. According to the maps, the area with the metal dragons is somewhere between Tai Bwo Wannai and Shilo Village, pretty close to where the graahks are. This suggests that before the humans came, the Dragonkin may have given them graahks to eat before experimenting with gems.

The local gems include topaz, jade and opal. All of these gems are the easiest to cut, and may have made up the earliest attempts at creating gemstone dragons, but they were likely to fail because the gems were semi-precious and so easy to crush. So the Dragonkin that was making them would have started experimenting with precious gems which they managed to forage from ore mining.

It may even have been Forcae, the one who started off the metal dragon project and continued pursuing it, who had used the gems foraged from gathering ores to start the gemstone project. This can be further elaborated when we look at the gemstone dragons' 100% drop, the adamant dragon bones. It suggests that Forcae had taken his adamant dragons from Brimhaven and started using gems on some of them, before heading to Kethsi where he began work on rune dragons.

As for the enchantments, even the semi-precious gems used on the failures had their uses. Opal bolts can be enchanted to harness lightning to a small extent, jade could use earth power and topaz can reduce the opponent's magical power. Since only the dragonstone ones and higher had survived, this could mean that diamond dragons and less had died due to their gems being too brittle to make use as an armour, or that the enchantments were too weak.

What I would like to know is this. Dragonstones could have been found in various places and he might have taken onyx from the Tzhaar, but how did he find hydrix? Is it possible that he raided the Underworld for them?

Fair theory with the map comparisons.

And I like the under-Dragonstone gem theory you have.

I know that Onyxes are at least not entirely limited to the Tzhaar as they can be found within the Gem Rocks at Prifddinas.
Hydrixes I've no idea if they have lore behind them as stated in a stream or something, I'm not sure where to find out more than that.

I just assumed that the caves where the Gemstone Dragons reside contain natural gem formations and that source of them is where the Dragonkin received the gems for the experimentation. (And the reason why the Gemstone Dragons are found there.)

Though about the Adamant Dragon bones I don't believe they should be counted thus far.
They were a hotfix until Jagex can rename the bones to something more encompassing.

Some dull theories:

- They started out as metallic dragons (Adamant in this case), but due to a lack of normal food, they were gradually forced to eat gems. In addition, their habitat, being heavy in gems, the gems meshed with their physical bodies.
The survivors, over time, began to take on more and more gem-like bodies.
The Dragonstone, Onyx, and Hydrix are simply the apex of adaptation and mutation.

- They were never really intended to "be" anything.
A craftsman had access to Adamant Dragon Bones and used that as the skeleton. Then literally crafted several life size replica dragons from all the gems in the mine.
Either a freak leakage of energy from the Nature Altar, a passing mage, or just an attempt to cast an enchantment spell to give the creations an extra sparkle ... the things came to life as gemstone dragons.

- Gemstone Dragons were a pre-cursor to metal dragons.
Forcae didn't mention the dragons in his experiments because he initially considered them a failure. (The gemstone dragons always tended to crack or were too weak, even compared to other dragons.)
His attention to them was extremely short lived. So he abandoned the remaining gemstone dragons, fully expecting them to eventually die off.
They, however, not only survived, but even thrived.

- Gemstone Dragons are an evolution of metal dragons.
What happens if a metallic dragon lives long enough?
While each metallic dragon is a beast in it's own right, we're not 100% certain if anything ... interesting ... happens to a metallic dragon if you give it enough time on its own.
It's possible that Gemstone Dragons are a byproduct of what happens to an Adamant Dragon.
Other metallic (Bronze-Mithril) dragons, given enough time, and right circumstances, become lower tier gems dragons.
Ho boy would I not want to see what a Runite Dragon becomes ....
