You know, recently I've noticed that Runescapes Lore is somewhat of a mirrored image of Earths religious history. The Guthixian faction, it is essentially the Norse mythology. Dwarves, Faries, these are both from Norse Mythology. Valhalla, once more from Norse. The Fremmnick, these are the Vikings.

The idea of Guthixian worship making way for Zamorakian and Saradomin, this corelates to how Christianity became the prevailing religion, upsupring the Norse gods, back during the Roman inquisition.

Zamorak betraying Zaros, this could be seen as Lucifer leaving heaven in the old testament.

The idea of the elder gods, this pulls from various parts, one of the more noticable ones being the Greeks. In Greek Mythology, There were two "Elder Gods", Mother Earth, and Father Sky, which gave birth to the Titans, and these later gave birth to the Gods of Olympous, which could be seen as the Young Gods.

Honestly, the deeper you dig, the more you find that correlates to Earth and it's history and religion.

To go further, Xua-Tok,(Spelling is wrong, I know) Is Chtuluu, the Icyeene are angels, Gnomes and Leprechauns, others races of the Guthixian faction, are also from Norse mythology.

Some of it is obvious of course, like V being Thor, the Desert Pantheon being Egyptian, Infernus equating to the idea of Hell, but some of it isn't as obvious, such as how deep the Guthixian Faction is rooted in Norse Mythology.

I just find it interesting.

I believe Zamorak's betrayal of Zaros was meant to resemble the assassination of Julius Caesar more than anything else.

The subsequent collapse of the empire mirrors the collapse and division of the Roman Empire (it even extends to the point that Saradomin took over one chunk of the empire's lands, much like the holy Roman Empire, whilst Zamorak took over the other, like the Byzantine Empire).

Is the Earth really round though? I've always felt it was more of a Dodeckahidran prism than round to be honest.

Spherical is very laid back way of saying it's roughly ball shaped lumpy thing floating in space. It's shape is irregular....

That is so very......lumpy. :P

And in reply to that last pic, Don't feed the trolls?

Dwarves questline is definitely my favourite. It's a shame we don't know what the connection was between the Red axe and that gnome from Arposandra.
I think that was being left for the Gnome quests to resolve.

The Zarosian Empire is most definitely designed to parallel the Roman Empire. There are so many similarities it's slightly ridiculous. Not that that bothers me as I'm reading ancient history. The death of Julius Caesar for all intents and purposes was only the end of the roman republic though which doesn't quite mesh the same.

The real world parallels would be something more along these lines.

Infernus and daemons= ancient Greeks (where Zaros learned of culture, language art etc. Large influence on future empire)

Loarnab- Barbarian society before the roman empire.

Zarosian Empire- The roman empire. This speaks for itself. The god wars following can represent the strife after the fall, with the brief counterattack by Azzanadra and Nex compared to the Western roman empire managing to conquer a lot of lost territory under Justinian and Belisarius.

Saradomin and Zamorak- Saradomin is obvious and the current world of runescape is pretty much the end of the middle ages heading into the renaissance. (Invention etc) More difficult to place Zamorak. The best I think of are the 1st-3rd crusades with Zamorak representing the Islamic nations.

Guthixianism doesn't really have a place outside of the Vikings, but the only way it is similar in this regard is the fact that they were uncommon religions in much of the world.

The others all speak for the themselves. Ancient Egypt=Kharid etc.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes

Guthixianism isn't necessarily Norse, but general Pagan belief, of which pre-Roman Norse folk were a part of.

A couple of interesting things are those in-game religions and beliefs that come from out-of-world. There is a world called Teragard, the homeworld of humans, said to be a colder planet.

The Fremennik afterlife that we visit in Blood Runs Deep is actually the afterlife for Teragard. Though not mentioned by name, it is effectively Asgard/Valhalla.

(Which is infinitely interesting to me, given that we know thus far that Teragard's high society and civilization have turned to scientific means - utilizing The Schism, a hole to Gielinor, as the power-source for the world. Mad-Scientist-Vikings? Magiscience-Viking-Mages?)

However, there is one other afterlife that some of the Fremennik claim to go to - one that is only mentioned by name once in-game; Niflheim. It turns out that this is simply the afterlife for Gielinor, the Grim Underworld.

Those who die glorious deaths as heroes and revel in their old culture are ferried to the Teragardian afterlife, but those others who feel disconnected from their old culture because of their inglorious deaths are instead ferried to Gielinor's afterlife, and not (what I am calling) Asgard.

Now, the comparison to Asgard is interesting because of one thing.

There is a world of 'beautiful fire' called Muspell, which is another thing ripped directly from Norse mythology: Muspelheim. It was intended to be the homeworld of the Auspah, a race enslaved and eradicated by the Fremennik barbarians in the 2nd Age on Gielinor.

(Side-note: V, god-hero of the Fremennik, also dealt with the Queen of Ashes, whose motif is fire and radiance, and he had nasty things to say - it may be that she originated from Muspell as well.)

In Norse myth, Asgard and Muspelheim are destined to war at Ragnarok. Surtr and the fire giants are meant to destroy Bifrost, the bridge to Asgard, starting the end of the world. Food for thought.
