Of course there is no definitive answer, but I'd like some speculation from the folks here. (Spoilers from Sliske's Endgame)
The elders are awake. The landmarks Ullek, ice and wolf mountain, karamja volcano, and Entrana are still around(though granted we haven't seen the other 3, Bik might just be making noise while still in island mode). So I am assuming that they hatched from their eggs in the elder halls. Does that mean they have already begun draining anima from Gielinor? Rock spider mama looked in pretty good shape. Maximoom powah n' urrthang.
My personal thought is Gielinor is quite unlike anything they've ever created, and given the vastness of sentient life, anima production is at an all time high. Perhaps this world has enough for them to reach a stable form without destroying it.

What I want to know is if the Elder Mirror can clone anima, why not abuse this hax and just...clone anima until they're satisfied?
Runescape doesn't need a hero...it needs a villain. An all encompassing force of evil that will remain ever-threatening and use chaos to make the peoples of Gielinor tolerate each other, grow strong together, and fight side by side against this evil. I am that villain.

Here's a formula I came up with.
Raw anima > Heart anima >/= Artefact power used for ascension > Souls > Magic
This is what I consider a refinery process for the Elder Gods to filter raw anima from the other sources (Artefact and less), and the Elder Gods can only consume the raw stuff. The formula might explain why the Mirror could duplicate the anima from the Heart to overload the Catalyst, but I think using the Mirror to copy raw anima just won't work. It was used on V to spread his power out away from him and weaken him, and when the Mirror stored enough of his power, the Kin used it in an attack to finish him off.
But raw anima in itself from which magic, souls and everything else comes from is likely too strong even for artefacts to handle, which is why there are different tiers for gods. Users such as Saradomin and Zamorak are typically tier 4 or 5 unless they manage to absorb another source of power, such as Guthix's energy in the BoL in Saradomin's case and the knowledge of anima that Guthix used to jump to tier 2 after Seren taught him about it. Guthix may even have been able to tap slightly into raw anima itself, which may explain why he was slightly stronger than Zaros or Seren who are made from the little raw anima that Mah could use on Freneskae.
