Knowns: The Zarosian afterlife is 'Erebus'; Raksha wishes to drag you into Erebus; Zaros is a creation of Mah; Mah was tainted and ended up deformed; Mah's appearance is vastly different from the other elders; Zaros has knowledge of events that predate his arrival on Geilinor, namely Kranon's mutation and goals and Raksha; Zaros has some, possibly complete immunity to the effects of Shadow Anima; Zaros is immune to Jas' god suppression effects during Sliske's endgame.

Theory: As we know, Mah's corruption is like that of the tainted shard that Zemougal uses for necromancy. My theory is Xau touched Mah's egg as it was hatching and corrupted it. This explains her odd appearance (her hands look like those of Xau-Tak and her head looks like one of the black slayer masks) Because Mah is corrupted, she creates an agent of Xau-Tak to attempt to bring him into this world. Hence: Zaros. Zaros is full of shadow anima and is therefore not affected by it or the Elder gods magicks. Mah, who's nightmares are of Zaros, wants to prevent this, created his opposite, Seren. When the two are near each other they become complacent. Zaros did not develop the familial ties to Mah that Seren did because he does not see her as his creator, Xau-Tak's influence through Mah is his real creator. Zaros time in the shadow realm has likely given him the knowledge of all of these things and more. Mainly that of Kranon and Raksha and a sixth elder god. Which is why he knew of Kranon's plan and did nothing to stop it. He told his own followers of Kranon's plan and some of them perceived it as a threat but it doesn't appear Zaros did because brining forth Xau-Tak is his soul purpose in life. Mah, likely still terrified of Zaros being alive and well, created the Mahjarrat, beings of great strength, and unlimited potential (the trait Mah is often associated with.) One of these Mahjarrat fulfilled his potential and killed Zaros. Zaros ditched his body and went back to his creator to stay alive....
I have seen the dark universe yawning, where the black planets roll without aim;
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without knowledge or lustre or name.

Finally the world guardian comes along and makes Zaros a new body and he returns to his original goal of bringing forth Xau-Tak. Now, I don't know if Zaros has always been aware of this. He could very well be doing so unknowingly until recently (when he was rejected by Jas.) He now seems to have his sights on the Monolith. Which we heard about back in Death at Sea:
"Who carves his hate upon the Monolith? Xau-Tak!" My theory is Zaros is the dark Messiah of Xau-Tak, a being who created him through its corrupted influence on Mah. Mah in desperation and limited response made Seren to neutralize him. Realizing his threat was greater than previously thought, made the Mahjarrat as a last attempt to defeat Zaros. This sort of worked for awhile but ultimately failed. And that brings us to the present. Zaros made no attempt to stop Kranon, he willingly awakened Raksha, he now will aim his hate at the Monolith and come into direct conflict with his "sister" Seren. The monolith filled Raksha with shadow anima, maybe it can be used to do the same to the Elder eggs and taint them the way Mah was tainted, in doing so insuring the demise of the Elder gods and making him the ultimate being in the universe and leaving Xau-Tak unopposed upon his eventual arrival to this plane of existence.

This theory does make sense, but I hope it's incorrect simply because I don't want to see literally everything be drawn back to Xau-Tak. Especially since it was revealed that Xau-Tak was responsible for sabotaging Mah's egg. I like the character of Zaros better when he is acting on his own interests, and certainly not those of Xau-Tak..
To those cursed by war and pest, Come into the light of Armadyl and rest. This is the law of Armadyl.

If it werent for all the illusions to Xau in Azzys quest id probably believe that Zaros was no way tied to him but it appears that in some way he is. Whether its direct, attempting to use him like the demons in daemonheim, or a means to counter the elders, its there.
