I'm pretty sure we're meant to understand that Sliske has, in that moment, become some sort of god. Lucien, Palkeera, and Daemonheim lore all establish that non-sacrificed Mahjarrat leave corpses behind. Somehow, our knowledge of Sliske's secret plan enables us to stop him from slipping into the shadow realm, and makes us immune to his magic in the final phase of the fight - indicating he has become divine.
So, was there some sort of plug on all the artefact and godly power surrounding him, a stopgap keeping him mortal that we somehow managed to pull? I'm hoping the replayable release of Endgame restores the scrapped cutscene and explains just what happened.
