As gamers we typically play a wide amount of genres/games, in greatly varying amounts of time and for vastly differing types of motivation to ourselves and/or our communities within said genres/games throughout our lifetime. One such type of motivation are certificates of our great accomplishments within said genre/game. In my own opinion it is in this aspect that OSRS succeeds the greatest. Level 99 stats, collection logs, combat achievements, quests completed…the list goes on. The availability to track all of these things gives us as the player the ability to plan our own path to what we consider to be a time-worthy goal for an appropriate amount of bragging rights. The availability also has laid the foundation for content creators the ability to discover, showcase and curate all sorts of new ways of playing this very content-dense game to their communities. In my own experience it is the denseness of the game that can be the most daunting aspect from an accessibility standpoint. With so many avenues to choose from and end-game goals that take upwards of 5000+ hours of gameplay I find it difficult to break down clear paths for myself. It is with these things in mind that I propose the following.

I propose the addition of a new area to somewhere within the lands that will be named School of Gielinor. Players will be able to visit the school to enroll in classes. Classes will be designed curations of task lists created by members of the community with the intent to showcase a variety of possible gameplay options throughout the entirety of available progression, from early game to post endgame. Each class will have minimum requirements and clear pass conditions based upon a single or combination of currently tracked statistics in the game (skill levels, quests completed, kill counts, etc) along with an estimated time to complete (real-life time, possibly displayed as credit hours.) While enrolled in the class there will be an in-game menu available to remind the player of their current assignments, along with tips from the curator to help keep track of best ways to go about doing so. Upon completion of the class you will receive a certificate from the curator showing an overview snapshot of what your character's progression looked like on graduation day.

In essence, the School of Gielinor will be an in-game representation of a connection that already exists. I believe there are many people who enjoy watching OSRS content on the various media platforms, some of whom also play the game following along with their favorite creators and others who only watch without ever making the jump to being in game. For those who already play this would be a tool to further enhance the connection to the experience. For those who do not already play this may provide the motivation to give it a shot.

The tool to create classes should be open to all. It would essentially be a level maker tool for OSRS, similar to Super Mario Maker for Mario. The ultimate idea behind what I am trying to portray is the increase of accessibility of the game to more people. The 5 year max stat content creator designing an endgame class of slaying all bosses for their x amount of followers and the full-time job 500 total level uncle designing a class slaying chickens for his nieces/nephews are both equally important to driving forward the intention of the game: to have fun.

There are two major concerns I have in regards to the viability of this idea: implementation (I imagine there are quite a few hurdles involved in creating, implementing and maintaining such a thing in-game) and an unnecessary duplication of efforts (is it worth all of the work when I as a player can follow along from the videos I’m already watching, the wiki I’m already reading.)

Example #1 - Early game class

Class Name: Introduction to Magic F2P
Curator: Professor Oogi

Minimum Stat Req to signup: None
Minimum Quests Req to signup: None

Description: Have you ever wanted to be a battlestaff wielding mage but have no idea how to begin?! Look no further! After graduating from my class you will have the ability to cast the mighty Wind Bolt!

Completion Req: Level 17 Magic and Imp Catcher quest

Tooltip Display: Remember to wield your staff for ease of use. Cows and other monsters near Lumbridge make for great fights at this level. Runes can be purchased at shops throughout the land.

I have further ideas of what this may best look like in its end form, however I am pausing the brainstorming where I have in order to get a feel from the community as to whether this may even be a worthy endeavour to continue thinking about.

Innovative idea I must say. Certainly as a player I'm not privy to what the technical limitations may be but all great ideas start somewhere.

Keeping such players engaged is pretty important imo as that population is only going to grow into the future.

A few thoughts since posting:

The list of classes could be equated to a mod repository, community-made enhancements that modify not the existing content of the game but rather the gameplay experience of going through said content. Like any other mod database that is driven by the community the cream will rise to the top, allowing quality made classes to shine and grow in popularity.

As a player I am looking for someone with great experience in the different facets of the game to take my hand and show me the beauty that can be found in this very familiar world that I know so little about from personal experience. This could be equated to a Dungeon Master leading a group of friends through a D&D experience.

Despite there being many different combinations of the datasets available for class creation (nigh infinite possibly) I believe that there is the possible danger of too much overlap between classes. At certain points of character progression there are specific things that are best to do to continue the progression. Do these quests, unlock these areas, attain these skill levels. The “best” (quickest/most efficient in this case) ways to advance have been mapped out fairly thoroughly. While some may see this as a reason to not implement the idea I see it as an opportunity for the curators of classes to incorporate their own signatures into the classes. Lose an HCIM to a particular monster? Make anyone taking one of your classes kill 50 of them, whether or not it is directly related to the core curriculum of the course. Absolutely love one of the mini-games in OSRS? Make your students participate in x amount of games for each class. Feel there is a part of the world that does not get the attention it deserves? Incorporate ways in your classes for these areas to be explored. It is this aspect, the “signature”, that the school may shine the most.

All of us start as neophytes in any given subject matter we wish to study in life. We seek out experts in those fields to learn from to enhance our knowledge of the subject. After a period of time dedicated to study and practice we ourselves advance enough to begin teaching the basics to new neophytes who have taken an interest while we continue learning from those who came before us. This circle of learning fits in perfectly with the idea being a school.
