As for a new skill I would suggest the industrialization of Gielinor.
Industrialization developed with the help of steam power, oil and electricity. Steam power is already in use by the dwarfs to power the blast furnace. But not (yet) in the hand of the common man.
I would suggest that industrialization would be a master skill that require additional skill, one or multiple to create machines to help us in our everyday lifes. Construction, smithing, and crafting being some of the skills that could aid in creating machines like a steam powered saw mill. So ffor I can see, the current saw mills are still powered by hand. Can see a windmill or steam engine running. Poor operator. This way we can load our new saw mill with logs and let the machine run trough the lot and collect them later.
In itself it will be a complementary skill. One cannot work without the other. So you need water and coal to make steam. You would need a wind powered waterpump to collect the vast amounts of water needed. A browncoal mine will have to be powered by a steam engine. Feeding itself with browncoal and other devices wich could also mine other ores.
Wind and water is more common near the sea. So I would suggest building the waterpump there. Browncoal is only available in certain places so it will need some exploring to find the right place to build the browcoal mine. Same with other ores. It could aswell be a small industrial complex wich gathers sandstone, grinds it and is fed into a furnace together with collected seaweed (still gathered by hand) to make molten glass. Or if the skill lvl isnted that high yet. Build only the furnace and feen buckets of sand yourself.
Maybe you can see, industrialization could be all over Gielinor and for various gathering skills. It should be a slow passive addition to the teadious gathering skills but award no experience toward those. As you did not do anything.
Endless possibilites.
