I'd like to start a fairly generalised thread where the forum community here discuss what they want out of this new skill design process.

I'm aiming for this to be a general discussion lounge type of thing to assist Jagex in the community consultation process on the official forums.

It's great to see some ideas already and so far I'm quite keen on an Engineering skill as described by a poster in a recent thread in this section.

My ideas are not specific yet, I'm a bit of an old school boomer as far as content changes go but I'm pragmatic enough to recognise that change can be good so I'd like to have my own thoughts shaped by you guys.

---My thoughts so far on the new skill --

While reading the latest newspost on the community consultation process, Jagex's examples of Agility and Slayer being skills that are 'hard to describe', struck me.

I very much like the idea of the new skill fitting into this category as my core motivation is to keep the skill's importance somewhat ambiguous like those existing skills in that category. As crazy as it sounds, training agility is not crucial to participating in the vast majority of the games content and progression and yet we still all value it like any other skill.

This for me, would keep the game feeling like the old game we know and love while most certainly adding something valuable to the game that provides not only QOLs like agility does, but rewards in other areas of the game too (again, much like agility does).

Discuss away!

i no not a single person who wants a new skill..... this will ruin the game, if they want a new skill they need to go play rs3 they can turn off EOC and play it as OSRS on Legacy mode. this is a bad idea, i dont see why they need to pressure for a new skill, the last quests mini games and bosses are have been amazing keep up the hard work guys thanks for everything you do for us.

your friend dethcorebree vet player for 18 years.

for those going to rag me on this trust me adding anew skill would cause much chaos to the game, hyper inflation mainly

I just filled out the survey for the new skill. Interesting seeing some of the ideas out there. Personally, enjoyed thinking about having a new companion. Made me wonder about the idea of a new skill. What if we replaced the skill with the companion who then had its own set of combat levels. There would be three choices of pets. Melee, magic and ranged. Each one would train its respective skills relevant to its type. Could be a dragon for magic, a wolf for melee and an aviansie for ranged. Combat style could be set and might even be relevant to command your companion into the correct combat style such as in barbarian assault. This would leave high scores unaltered as we would not directly have a new skill but rather a whole new companion to train. Maybe have separate high scores for companions.

Training ones companion could come in a variety of methods and leaves for an open route to improve upon. There could be battles between each others companions like a poke battle. This would be like the duel arena but for companions. They could also gain general experience in any combat and perhaps some other minigames that are focused on working with other players instead of against them. They would act like a thrull in regular combat, except, one that levels up. Maybe even doubles as a mount. In the minigames, however, one would have commands to choose from. Perhaps as emote icons.

Wanted to throw the idea out there and see what people think. I can see reason for being skeptical. Personally played from 2004-2007 and then got back into it in 2020. A lot has changed already. Tried finding the market in fally park then found out about the ge. A companion would change a lot but maybe that is ok. When I used to play, skill additions to the game were a thing so why not now? Anyways, my idea was really to sort of skip the skill and just add companions that act in a way like a new skill but without changing the high scores. Interested to see what people think. Semaj out!

Interesting suggestion Semaj. I think touching the combat is a bit too much for me as its a core aspect of the game but the way you suggested it does make it very interesting ngl. In general as long as it doesn't make existing combat metas not worthwhile then it's great. I've always been of the mind that we should try and make existing methods still relatively viable even if it's not BIS. I think your suggestion actually comes closest to achieving that as far as the combat system goes.

There was a poll conducted for this very question, it was one of the most voted-on and passed with 80% approving of the idea of a new skill. It's definitely in the interest of the playerbase. No doubt economy issues are important to consider but I don't think that means a skill shouldn't happen. The economic repercussions just need considering as part of the process.

To be fair, like everything in this games history, tweaking over time even after the content has been released would take this into account.
