Just wanted a place to pose some ideas on Sailing content including rewards/training methods.

I've seen a lot of talk and debate about how exactly this skill could be trained, as it's a very abstract concept to begin with. So here's what I think:

Training:

- For one, I believe this skill should offer a base passive xp. By this, I mean Players should receive a small amount of xp by simply passively using the skill, similar to how players receive a token amount of xp for using an Agility shortcut, players should receive a token amount of xp at set intervals by simply navigating their ship. But similar to how using shortcuts is not intended to act as a primary training method, this too will not be a primary source of Sailing xp. It is simply a token reward for engaging with the skill.

- Second, I believe one of the major sources of xp could come from a sort of contract system, in which you are using your ship to complete jobs for which you are hired; contracts could be grabbed at any port. These jobs would reward a chunk of xp (and perhaps other rewards) based on the tier/difficulty, and how quickly/effectively they were completed. For example, a contract that tasks you with shipping goods from one port to another, may grant rewards based on how quickly you complete the trip, and how well you defend your goods from pirates/storms/monsters, with the largest xp coming from quickly delivering perfectly preserved goods. Contracts could have different tiers of difficulty that you unlock as your level increases. A few ideas for different contracts may include:
> Delivering goods for shops.
> Transporting passengers.
> Surveying a specific island for the Varrock Museum.
> Charting trade routes for the Charter Network.
> Locating/cataloguing animals for the Ardougne Zoo.
> Locating/cataloguing plant species for the Farming Guild.
> Pirate bounties in which you must track down notorious criminals based on recent sightings, and engage them in ship-to-ship combat.

Third, I believe it is important for the skill to introduce new, permanent island locations within the reward space of the Sailing, and I believe that players should receive a lump sum of xp for the first time they set anchor at these new locations.

-

The next major aspect I believe should be included is a system of distinct Seas with their own quirks and features. I've only personally contemplated 2 ideas, but I feel it can be expanded.

> The Northern Sea: This region contains some of the most dangerous waters on Gielinor. Besides the swarms of dangerous sea monsters and active pirate syndicates, this sea also contains a region known as the Black Waters, in which players can engage in PvP ship-to-ship combat. The Northern sea offers some of the highest reward potential from contracts, but includes equally high risks; the greatest rewards are to be found from contracts completed in the Black Waters. The contracts here will focus heavily on hunting down pirates and dangerous sea monsters.

> The Southern Sea: This region is the least explored of the seas of Gielinor. Far south of any mapped regions, players will encounter the Mosaic Isles, a scattered and isolated assortment of uncharted and unclaimed atolls. This region will offer the wildest variety of contracts, and will focus heavily on surveying and cataloging. Players can discover and chart new islands in this region, and claim one as their own. These islands are procedurally generated and instanced, similar to a POH, though you may also invite friends over to your island. Your island may be linked to your POH via construction of a portal. Each island has the potential to offer a variety of resources in a non-competitive manor, where only you and those you invite have access. Maybe your island has a Runite rock? Or maybe it has a small cave where black dragons can be found. Or perhaps your island has a native chinchompa population. Resource respawns are universal i.e. you can't hop to get your rune quicker.

The skill also needs things to break up the monotony of training. Distractions and interesting sidetracks that you'll encounter, similar to when you're wandering through the Gnome Stronghold and happen upon a fallen star.

This is the subject I've had the least amount of thought put into, but I imagine we could have at least a few interesting chance encounters like:
> Finding an abandoned/sunken ship and exploring/looting the remains.
> Happening upon a ship wreck in which you can rescue survivors for extra rewards/xp.
> Wandering into an active pirate siege, in which you can choose to defend the victim trade ship, hoping for a nice reward, or throw on your pirate hat and blow them both out of the water and loot all the booty you can carry.
> Encounter a trade ship that will offer to sell you uncommon and rare resources/items at a very reasonable price.

Reward space is by far the easiest to flesh out and I have full faith Jagex and the OSRS community can come up with some amazing incentives, but I thought I'd just toss out a few ideas of my own:

> Obviously, higher levels would offer higher tier ships/ship parts/crews.
> Have rare variants of Ship parts/ships that can be found either through contracts, chance encounters or battling pirates/sea monsters.
> Allow a higher Sailing level to influence the frequency and quality of resources found when exploring the Mosaic Isles.
> Have new permanent Islands that are unlocked as destinations at set Sailing levels. These new locations could offer unique rewards and incentives to go there via new skilling/combat methods, or perhaps new, never before discovered resources that allow you to create new products like, say, a new version of the Karambwan that heals 1 more HP, or perhaps a new secondary resource that allows for the creation of new, improved version of existing potions, like a Super Prayer potion that restores 2 more points than a Super Restore.
> Have players unlock new resources available for purchase from Charter crews, thanks to their efforts charting new trade routes. These we be a limited, player-specific pool, similar to daily Battle Staves. Perhaps players could unlock the ability to buy 10 Blue Dragon Scales per day? Or maybe an assortment of seeds could be purchased each day.

So let me know what you think. I wrote all of this on my lunch break at work today so I won't be all that offended if you hate it. I just want to get as much feedback and ideas directed towards Jagex as possible so the skill can get a running start.

I supported the sailing pitch and I think a lot of your ideas are gel well with what I personally envision for it too. I think there'll be more to come in the refinement stages but it's a great start so far.

I like the aspect of maintaining/shipbuilding being an important aspect of the skill too so it satisfies those who are warm to the idea but feel its otherwise too much like a minigame.

Better idea: throw sailing into the rs3 trash can

Better idea: Give up as the less than 20% who failed to win the new skill poll.

Always appreciate the constructive feedback, especially from those who clearly thoroughly read.

But seriously, as a player who actively plays both RS3 and OSRS (admittedly more so OSRS currently because I'm already comped in RS3) it's so strange to see so many people who don't play RS3, claiming all this stuff is just copying or becoming RS3. Like, please show me where the Sailing skill is in RS3 because I would love to play it. Player owned Ports is literally just a reskin of Farming and nothing like the proposed Sailing concepts.
