An idea I had for being able to recolor the smiths uniform using metal bars.
The ability to recolor the uniform can be unlocked from Kovac by purchasing a Uniform Pattern for 10,000 Foundry Reputation. This will allow you to use any piece of the uniform on an anvil while you have a hammer and any required materials in your inventory to open an option dialogue.
Each piece can be recolored individually using a number of bars depending on individual piece. Base colors can also be changed by using a corresponding armor piece.

Recolor costs:
Tunic = 5 Bars *OR* Platebody for base color, 3 Bars for trim
Trousers = 3 Bars *OR* Platelegs *OR* Plateskirt for base color, 2 Bars for trim
Gloves = 1 Bar *OR* Gloves (RFD) for base color, 1 Bar for (i) variant trim (default gloves have no trim)
Boots = 2 Bars *OR* Boots for base color, 1 Bar for trim

Base colors:
15 Smithing + Bronze = brown; default color
18 Smithing + Blurite = cyan; requires The Knight's Sword
20 Smithing + Iron = dark gray
25 Smithing + Elemental = purple; requires Elemental Workshop I
35 Smithing + Steel = light gray
40 Smithing + Black = black; requires Wanted!
40 Smithing + Primed Mind = orange; requires Elemental Workshop II
45 Smithing + White = white; requires Wanted!
50 Smithing + Lovakite = red; requires 75-100% Lovakengj favour
55 Smithing + Mithril = blue
75 Smithing + Adamantite = green
90 Smithing + Runite = teal; requires Dragon Slayer I

Trim colors:
10 Smithing + Bronze = brown
13 Smithing + Blurite = cyan; requires The Knight's Sword
15 Smithing + Iron = dark gray
20 Smithing + Silver = silver
20 Smithing + Elemental = purple; requires Elemental Workshop I
30 Smithing + Steel = light gray
35 Smithing + Primed Mind = orange; requires Elemental Workshop II
40 Smithing + Gold = gold; default color
45 Smithing + Lovakite = red; requires 75-100% Lovakengj favour
50 Smithing + Mithril = blue
70 Smithing + Adamantite = green
85 Smithing + Runite = teal; default (i) variant color

Love this concept. More reward options are a good idea. Player should be able to recolor each item individually (not necessarily match the rest of the outfit)

Being able to use silver and gold as base colors would allow for even more customization. (mind base with mind trim for each piece of the outfit would be incredibly tedious)

Greatly appreciate the feedback!

Altering each individual outfit piece was an idea I played with when I first came up with this idea; could easily be feasible by adjusting the bar costs.

My main reason for not including Silver or Gold as base colors is mostly because they are metals used in Crafting as opposed to Smithing. Yes, Smithing is required to smelt the ores into bars, but they are mostly used for jewelry as opposed to weapons or armor, hence why it seemed appropriate to include them as trim colors but not base colors.

I agree that Primed Mind would be insanely tedious; it was included--along with Elemental, Lovakite, and Blurite--for posterity's sake more than anything else. Though they don't cover the full spectrum of armor and weapons like the other metals, they are still used as such.

Updates to original idea:

~Recolors are now on a per-piece basis and can be done with raw Bars *OR* a corresponding armor piece

~Black and White were included as possible base colors using corresponding armor pieces, but they were not included as trim colors since bars for these metals do not exist in the game.
