This week we saw Mod Sween return with a marketing bent in the latest livestream.

It made me think, wouldn't it be great for OSRS (Both games even) to be supported on gaming consoles? It would get the game in front of more players as the successful development of mobile saw back in 2018 and therefore act as positive marketing for the game too.

Just my 2c. Discuss away! :)

I highly agree mate. I think OSRS would blow up on the nintedo switch since games like stardew valley, animal crossing have done well. Definitely all consoles would help and share growth. Clan Defy -

You're comparing apples and oranges there.

SDV and AC (at least the New Horizons iteration) are single player games. You don't NEED other peeps in order to get the most out of either of them. They have an option for co-op, but it isn't required.

If jagex ever wanted to offer old school on consoles.. as a single player game.. they'd make a fortune.

But it's an MMO and as such, its' days are numbered. IMO, ofc.

I'd hesitate to wager that its days are numbered. It's been consistently suggested for almost as long as either version of the game has existed and yet OSRS's peak years in terms of player count are basically the present day.

I too used to believe that during various times, such as the wildy/free trade restrictions in 2007 and even 2007 servers being brought back in 2013. The original team working on OSRS even thought it was potentially going to fail.

So in spite of all that very real threat, I think the games best days continue to be ahead of it. If anything, stagnation is the biggest threat to the game, again just IMO.

I think OSRS would still do well released as an MMO as it seems to play like a single player game with players around you, or sometimes helping you. I can't give my two cents on RS3 as I don't actively log in to play the actual game.

OSRS for most players is played like a single player experience with other players joining in for the ride. Obviously there are players who enjoy playing content with mates and clan members, but the game and how players play has changed to what it used to be in the times where clans where hugely involved in things like clan wars, and bossing together. Nowadays you can just find a pug or duo, but usually just solo content along the journey (again much different to how most of us played from clan chat 2007? - 2011).

I can see OSRS being shipped on console still being an MMO and being successful through players playing like a single player experience. The content is always designed on OSRS to be able to be soloable through practice too so it opens up a hell of a lot of possibilities and then if you get bored you can join in with other players.

I would say the experience would be very similar to animal crossing and stardew with other players you see around the areas in the game.

I also think their new launcher will be a great time to reach out to these online game systems and showcase how they can authenticate accounts and make it easy for players to use Game Pass, PS Network, Nintendo Switch online, and join and create an account from scratch. This type of ease of access will really demonstrate that RS wants to branch out. I don't know how all this type of stuff would get passed through but I feel like the hurdles are worth trying to jump through if Jagex wants what's best for its players and stakeholders.

Having been familiar with runescape for nigh on 20 years, and having more than 8K hours invested in SDV as well as currently playing ACNH for the 11th time.. I can say with absolute certainty that "the experience" would be NOTHING "similar" to AC and/or SDV.

They are worlds apart in the type of game.

There is no combat in ACNH. None.

Old school is combat focused.. and has been for a very long time. It's also got a fair few peeps with a toxic level far above 99 (something single players can't possibly have.. because the npc's might be annoying, but they're certainly not the level of toxic that one sees in many mmo's).

In osrs there's really no reason to 'do' everything. Fishing, right? But unless you want the fishing cape there's no reason to do it.. because combat will net you the same fish?

In both SDV and ACNH there's a reason to fish.. or farm.. or craft.. in old school.. not so much. Not when combat gives you what you wanted.

You don't have to admit that these games are worlds apart.. not even close to the same genre.. but anyone familiar with all of them knows beyond any doubt that having old school on switch would be NOTHING like SDV or ACNH.

Besides.. jagex looked into porting some time ago (not to the switch afaik, but still) and there were many reasons they chose not to go that route.

Unless those reasons were resolved, it ain't gonna happen.

But if they manage to do it.. I'd rather see them offer it as a single player game and remove anything that REQUIRES other players.

I see your point man and I now agree. There are completely different games. I'm not sure why I've always found animal crossing to be similar. I think it's the completionism but it definitely feels at a leisure pace due to being single player. Clan Defy -

It's worth pointing out that, imo, how it compares to other games probably doesn't matter as the purpose would be to get the game in front of as many people as possible. I'd imagine like mobile itself, putting the game on consoles would create success in that department.
