I'm a fairly new player and I really like mining and making my own gear in many games, so I wanted to do the same in OSRS. Turns out you need absurdly high levels to mine and smith mithril/adamant/rune ore and make it into gear. I made a post on the OSRS reddit about it and it seems mining/smithing has just been untouched for a very long time.
I would have sworn the level requirements to get mithril/adamant gear were way lower and apparently that is the case in the newer versions of RuneScape, which I guess I played way back in the day.
So my suggestion is to make mining/smithing levels in line with RS3, allowing you to mine and smith mithril starting at lvl 30 for example.
I'm quite torn on this one since the problem with it is pretty clear but you'd have to completely change the identity of the skill if a major milestone overhaul was made and would ruin the nostalgia of smithing.
The purpose of this was so that high level characters would aid low level characters by giving them armor and weapons they could use, but not mine or smith.
The only way I would support is they added new metals and smithing at a higher level that would be comparable to get you can only get from monsters.
