In other modern MMO's heal spells are made to encourage team play, but I'm having a hard time understanding where they're useful in runescape. Only high level players can use them, and they're not useful in bossing because it nearly kills the caster. The only place I've found they're even usable is to mess with pker's in the wilderness. Is there anywhere that it might actually be useful to be a friendly, helpful healer?

Modern MMOs have far more and better mechanics than OSRS in combat. OSRS players won't get KOed by a boss 99.9999% of the time if they have the right prayer on. Virtually no skills or talents are needed in OSRS. They can't just make "healers" more powerful in OSRS because combat is just way too simple.

I can't see anywhere they have a use in pvm as they drain your own health to heal the other player. Maybe proper healing spells can be added to the arceuus spellbook in a future update.

That's what I mentioned. OSRS is just way too simple a game. In other modern MMOs as OP is trying to compare to, healers are far more purposeful and have far more mechanics. Healers also buff their allies and debuff the others. They also have far better mechanics to compensate for their own sacrifice.

Just to look at an MMO we should be very familiar with, RS3... Well, it is not a modern MMO, but a modernized one rather. Healers can be implemented pretty close to other modern MMOs because in RS3 we have plenty of self healing abilities as well as damage blocking ones like Resonance and Barricade that allow us to survive for quite a while with even just 1 HP. We also have IMMORTALITY and such mechanics in RS3 that allow us to reborn immediately after we sacrificed our HP and unfortunately die for our allies. Essentially, we can have not just Healers, but many subcategories of Healers in RS3 including Necromancers.

Regretfully, OSRS absolutely lacks the EOC-ish abilities and mechanics almost all modern MMOs have, so classes like Healers are just a very weak and unfeasible idea.
