Hi there! World 429 here.

I was looking for a 'legacy' launcher of some sort on the OSRS site, where there aren't any of the updates past 2007.

Does this not exist, or am I not looking in the correct place?

I don't have much time anymore to learn new video games (or even play some of my beloved older ones!) in general very much anymore, as responsibilities and being an old man takes up a lot of time :-) but when I do get to play video games, I like to revisit some of the games I played in the past, and 2007 OSRS is one of those! I wish I did have time to learn new content, but life is very grand and I very much don't like to miss out on important events like my children's birthdays or adventures with the family. I digress, however, and I've found the current version or client offered on the official OSRS site has all sorts of stuff I never saw post-2007 ( February 22, 2013 ;-) ).

Is this intentional? Or am I missing something?

I would like to get back into Old School Runescape, however, this is all very new content to me and is not the game I remembered!
Again, I'm possibly missing an area on the OSRS site where they have legacy launchers of previous versions, or perhaps someone could shed some light about what has happened in the past 16 years to change OSRS to new content updates, that would be very enlightening for an old man!

Thanks in advance for your time and taking the time out to read a long-winded question.
Sincerely,
Would like to enjoy 2007 Runescape again,
World 429

Hi Tuffty, thanks much for the reply!

Perhaps I was a little too vague, I have this launcher already and it has updates on it like new areas, new quests, and its sounding like a new skill coming too.

Is there a way for me to regress back to 2007 Runescape circa 2013, so I can play Runescape without all of these (I'm sure wonderful) content updates?

I'm not interested in new content, or content released past Feb/March of 2013, as I don't have time nor the desire to be learning new content, I just want to play the old game I used to love and enjoy.

Is there some way for me to download that SPECIFIC version to play on my own, or would I have to create a mirror and do the regression myself/find a third party who has already done this?
I'm perfectly fine with creating my own "solo" mirror, as long as that's allowed, and doing all of the content regression myself, was just wondering if there was already a launcher available via the official Jagex websites, even to begin the process of making our own mirrors of a version we wish to play? I'm not interested in the current "Old School" Runescape, I'd like to play the older one I used to play.

:-) Hope that was a little more clear, and thanks again Tuffty!

Although some people call OSRS 2007scape, unfortunately it is not the 2007 version of Runescape. It is a 10 year old variant of Runescape, not a 16 year old 2007scape.

There is no way to go back to 2007. We can't remove Bond MTX. We can't nuke Zeah, Fossil Island etc. We can't stop the OSRS team to develop a new skill when the 2023 players voted for it.

The entire purpose of osrs was to give people a game that was pre eoc and sof. Many people thought those two had destroyed the game. We did not vote for a stagnate game but for a game that was able to avoid the two things that ruined it. As a result, there is no 2007scape. Jagex would not allow any company to create a version of their game, so the best you could do with your mirror is to have a solo game.

Thanks for your replies guys! I'm not really interested in its original purpose, the history, etc. I was asking about the availability of regressed versions, and the legality of creating a mirror of a piece of software that is part of Carlyle Global Investment Firm's $381 billion portfolio.

I'm only really interested in the answer to my question, I'm not here for conversation or to talk about the original intentions or history of the game.

My original question was posed, wanting to know if I was allowed to make my own solo mirror in order to play an older version, which, I've done before with many games and pieces of software, and I've actually already found many private and third parties have already done so for their own purpose, and you can even build your own servers with a ton of friends on it with your own rules, updates, and etc!

It'll be a relatively simple process, and shouldn't take me longer than a few hours with a little bit of intelligence to eke out the parts desired and undesired.... and again, was also asking if they had official mirrors on the site or an official registry of past updates, because then I could snag that version of the launcher and start my work there, in sake of precious time that as you can see, I don't like wasting. :-)

Thanks for the concern about the feasibility and the little history (not that my name isn't history enough), but again, not really answers to my question, but I appreciate you two reaching out with concern!

Many thanks, enjoy your Old School Runescapes you two!
Stay safe on these forums ;-)

if you mean is there a server that is literally just the 2007 rs game - no there isnt

if you are meaning can you make a server that is that, that would also be a no. private servers for rs are illegal.

Hi Tenebri!

Unfortunately, there are a ton of RSPS and third party clients as well as services for sale, botting clients, etc.

Until I get an official answer from an employee or forum moderator, I appreciate you reaching out but I'd like to hear from someone who can actually tell me for certain, no offense. This is a solo mirror that is not for sale, not for profit, and not for sharing.

And I'd also like to lock this thread past said-aforementioned reply, so I no longer have to answer these queries of concern.

Much love, thanks for reaching out!

It's highly unlikely to get an official answer from a Jagex Moderator on this. It's easier to get a response from a Forum Moderator; however, the answer will most likely be the same that has already been shared or with what I'll share below from Jagex's Terms & Conditions:

"You must not create or provide any other means by which any Jagex Product may be played by others ( including, without limitation, replacement or modified client/server software or server emulators ). Please note that any such activity may constitute civil wrongs and/or criminal offences, and we reserve the right to take such action as appropriate in the circumstances should we become aware that such offences are being committed."

You may find them at the very bottom of this page alongside the Rules of RuneScape.

Thanks Ana! I understand the ramifications of reverse engineering someone else's product, and it seems a lot of people on github and multiple other source-code reddit threads (and we won't mention tutorials) are being persecuted then. ;-)

Again, I appreciate your guys' concern, this wasn't really a general question to players,

This was a question to employees if they have a database that can be accessed of previous versions, and how much play do we have with the ASM library, to the classloaders, to the Java Virtual Machine. I'll assume silence is golden and don't share anything until told otherwise by previously mentioned.
For instance, Runelite was quintessential for Zeruth project, and they used the API found on Runelite's website.

I love the persecution bit though! Really tempts me to not be even more curious. :-)

Much love,
World 429

[Edit: I feel like I have to stress this again in general, I'm looking for older versions of the Old School Runescape launcher. This is in order to avoid third party websites, open-source API, or using unsavory software techniques such as reverse engineering or digital archiving. I know they're readily available, and some are even approved by Jagex for official use (ex: Runelite, see their website for their open-source API), but I'd much rather use an official Jagex/OSRS database or webpage of previous available versions in order to save time and effort, as well as avoiding those previously mentioned peoples :-) . So sorry to cause such a fuss, just trying to play the old game I used to play years ago!]
