Not really a rant, but more of a question/request (sorry if this is the wrong forum location for this).

I've been reading around forums, the wiki, posts etc. about the rules/limitations on inactive accounts holding onto some rare names that are wanted by active players. I was curious if Jagex will ever perform another clean up of names so I can hopefully grab one that I've had my eyes on for YEARS now.. If I read correctly, the last name cleanup was all the way back in 2014?

I don't want to mention the desired username that I want just to minimize the eyes on it (sorry if that's selfish..).

The particular name that I'm hoping to snag doesn't appear on the Highscores, etc etc. I know there are thousands of posts asking for this same thing but is there any assistance that someone can lend me for grabbing this username that's being held by someone who doesn't play anymore?

As a faithful player for years now, please!

It will drop at a random time on a random day. Just keep your eyes peeled for any announcements of a username clean up whether it's leaked or officially posted by jmods. Hopefully the next time a name sweep happens they add certain restrictions to prevent name sniping bots from grabbing rare names. Whether or not players think all names are unique or not, certain names are desired and have great value either to keep or eventually sell.

I can't imagine it coming randomly. Previously I would get an email alert warning me to secure the name on my noob account.

Also, it was just a throwaway line, but in one of the streams this year someone asked about it and the mod said there were no plans.

Looking on Reddit comments, it seems like the system was being abused by people who wanted to sell the names or scam selling names. More bad than good basically.

Has anyone suggested the obvious 'they should auction off names to the highest bidder' yet? Would that not tackle these auto-name-change bots/scripts?

What about a name-change token that you can buy/sell for other name-change tokens, that way there is no 'open door' for name scalpers to jump in when you're changing name. Since that's how they 'scam' a name when people are trading them off-site, using scripts. It'd work like a party cracker, if both players have their name tokens in their inventory they transfer simultaneously. What about something like that? Where there's a will there's a way. Bob says:

Never give your password out to anyone.
