The new log in form on the forums and elsewhere on the runescape forums does not support logging in with usernames. Rather, you are asked to log in with an email. If you use a runescape username to log in, then you must click another option and redirected to another page where you can use your username.
Why?
In the past the log in form supported both email and usernames. How is it possible that as time goes on, Jagex's website navigation is only getting worse? Pretty soon we won't be able to use our usernames at all and we'll be forced to use email, once Jagex accounts become mandatory.

Their website has been outdated for about a decade, these forums even more. The cracks are just getting more apparent.
I'm sure there's an aging codebase behind the website, but why would they take the time to update it to make it less compatible than it was prior? I suspect it's related to Jagex accounts but it's still incredibly inconvenient.

That's the answer. The website login flow has been changed with Jagex Accounts in mind. Also, accounts created since 24 November 2010 have already been logging in with email, so the option to log in with a username remains only for legacy support until the switch is made to Jagex accounts for all.
I've made the switch a while back and found the process was quick, easy, and painless including the processes to migrate my alt (which was also a legacy username account) into the JA. While I have no stake in
selling
the JA on you, I haven't missed logging in with the username and thought I'd share my personal experience on the process while I was here.
