I find it weird that the view Runemetrics profile button when you hover someone's avatar on the forums will clobber your current forum tab instead of opening in a new tab, but the button to return to Runescape.com does open a new tab!

Inconsistent and weird.

Please make it open in a new tab.

And while we're at it, maybe all three options should open in new tab?

You can right click the return-back arrow by your browser search field. That should let you return back to the thread that you were redirected from.

I agree though, it would be nice as a new tab. :P Life is like a camera: Just focus on what's important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don't work out, take another shot !
