The main theory involves Plageuis. I've read the novel myself, and he was quite the badass. It's not canon though, only the mentions of him in Episode I and III are. Guess they can take it whatever direction they want.

But yeah, from what we could see in the movie, Snoke looks more like Plageuis or the The Inquisitor than Palpatine. (Though who knows what Palpatine could look like.)

I'm glad a forum mod hid the other thread. le fucker spoiled the ending for me (about Han Solo dying) just a few hours before I saw the movie.

He was, but he was also skilled enough to get Schmi pregnant from half way across the galaxy by just manipulating midichlorians. He was always looking for a way to live eternally throughout the novels, though those aren't canon. Speaking of, the only mention of his race/how he looked, is Legends aswell. He might aswell be human now. I'm not sure if he looked like a muun in the movie.
But yeah, in Legends, Palpatine lives through a clone body. Iirc, Plageuis was the mastermind behind Palpatine's rise to power, he might've done something similiar.
