I don't know tv stuff so it might sound dumb

If I got a 4k tv do I need to have hd channels/pay my provider more to actually utilize it? Like if I have standard channels will it show up as 4k super clear?

All I know is we have the hd version of all the channels I go to, it says 'switching to hd preference' at the top when I put in like 41 for Nick and then it's automatically changed to the hd version: ch 1521.

My xfinity video options are 16:9 1080p60 hd at the highest on the list if that helps

Tv channels don't broadcast in 4k, probably because the bandwidth to make that happen is huge

You will not see an increase watching lower quality stuff on 4k, at the end of the day the quality is dictated by the pixels of the video, you can have the possibility to a show a billion pixels, but if your image consists of 8 pixels, it's simply gonna fill those billion pixels up with one of those 8 pixel colours depending on the location on your screen

There's very little point in owning a 4K TV unless you intend to play things at 4K resolution.

As Fluids has mentioned, no channels broadcast in 4K - but you can still get 4k "ultra HD" blu-ray discs, or games consoles/computer hooked up to your TV at 4k resolution.

if you own a lot of blu ray shit, or download blu ray shit, or play blu ray / HD quality games, it's a good TV. You still may notice an overall better quality picture as well, some TV's are just shit for various reasons... and getting a new TV with this quality will probably be an overall improvement.
