Indeed, this is a scam and mod invites do come only via message center. Jmods will only have gold crowns in chat as well, instead of another symbol.

In future, it is best to report these players ingame as that captures the text evidence for Jagex to take action.

Because of the naming of the account, the opening post has been removed.
