The Third age. a time after the wars of gods. Zaros gone, Saradomin and Zamorak reigning in their followers for a massive war. The smaller or less known gods contribute their forces to the war effort. Gods like Bandos lending Zamorak the aid of the Goblin and Orcs and so on. It begins and Havoc rains from the heavens. For the first time known to man, two gods fight on the material realm against each other.
The Fourth age. The world reels in the destruction caused by the god wars. Towns and cities destroyed; only the wilderness stands in its place. A wilderness too dangerous for the weak and faint of heart. The world is rebuilding, but no matter how much is done, it seems like there is always more.
In the wake of the rebuilding, empires left from the war start to take over. Impart laws and rules over the land. However, they are not the rulers they once were. Many years in war saw many kings and nobles killed only for their younger generations to take over. Those younger minds, less adept at handling the stress of rule and the pain of loss become bitter, angry even. They became corrupt and the more time passed, the more the people under them suffered.
The knights, once noble, just and brave have become sloppy and corrupt themselves. Extorting the hard working people. This became a problem for the rulers and kings. When they needed anything done that required more than brute force, the knights were less than competent. This lead to rulers and kings hiring assassins, mercenaries, and thieves.
Thus the age of Merc clans was born...
