So, I think most of us know that the mining and smithing rework is coming up soon.
My question is: How will this translate to IC?
Our guidelines for metals, such as their value, ease of smithing, ease of mining, etc, are based on what we're given in-game. Runite is hard to smith, difficult to find, and extremely pricy, because there are very few mining spots in game, and they require high mining and smithing levels. With the rework, runite will be brought down to a level 50 tier, which is below the current mithril tier of level 55. On top of this, there are 3 new metals being introduced: Necrite, Invictum, and Aetherium.

On an In-Character basis, will we say mithril and adamant are easier to obtain than we've been saying OOC, tone all the metals down a notch, etc etc, or will we just say these new metals are legendary tier and ignore them on the basis that no one should have them, continuing on as normal?

Would love to hear input.
Xoxo

Personally don't mind adamant and rune coming down to be accessable. I think it'd make more sense for adamant to be something that lower nobility had access to in limited quantities and then upper nobility having access to rune in very limited quantities. Dragon would need to go unchanged due to its place in lore. The other three we would need to wait and see the lore associated with it. The t70 seems to have a degree of lore regarding it and it's likely that the t80 and 90 will as well.

It's an awkward phenomenon that's going to create yet another divide in the community, I'm more than certain. I'll take about a day or so to think up arguments for and against it. The Sicarius |

It really depends on the lore. We've been given nothing yet, so it's not really worth discussion. My two cents on the matter is that they should all just be thrown on after dragon and keep the system intact. (We do have the problem of orikalk becoming an accessible thing.)

We know there will be new coal added. The metal's rarity aside, I want to say the new coal items get hotter and make it easier to smith what are currently our harder metals.

With it more smithable, it's more capable of being more common to see it about.

Okay. So. Imma throw out a bit of lore. Dragonmetal could only be previously smithed by one human: Linza. We all (hopefully) know what happened to her. Now, there is another person who can smith it, the Adventurer, but if Linza was the only human that could Smith dragonmetal, it means that she had (Pardon my fourth wall break) level 60 smithing at least. And she was considered the best smith in the land. This means that no character, in theory, should be able to surpass her. As such, I say the following: We stay as we are now, and say that nobody can smith any of the new metals. "I am true divinity! I am the father of nations and peoples! I am the thing you merely pretend to be! I am God, and I am King, and you can never defeat me!" ~Galath, Infinity Blade

Holding this discussion before we know anything about either types of ore is really dumb.

Linza isn't a master blacksmith. She's noted to be an expert, but not a master. She traveled around Gielinor and learned different types of smithing (blurite, elemental, dragon-smithing, barbarian, etc).

If you're, say, seventy or eighty and have traveled the world as she did, you're probably better than she is, just sans the dragon-metal smithing. Hell, if you specialize in one thing and do it extremely well, you'd still be top of the class.

Also, Linza doesn't like machinery. Which means that any innovative, new, Sixth-Age hipster smith doing some cool inventive **** is going to make better **** than hers.

I agree with the idea that these 'new' coals would be much better heating alternatives and would ease the forging of certain metals. (This is under my assumption that a lot of the difficulty around adamant is that it's incredibly finicky in regards to high temperature.)

As for the ore itself, there is no shame in stating that new deposits have been found. The Sixth Age was built on discovery, someone had to have found Guthix's resting place after all, and it's been a few years in-universe, so who's to say that further explorers haven't found any new deposits?

However, with that said, orikalkum is still an incredible rarity and everything beyond Dragon does border on 'legendary'. To be honest, I find the rework to be very refreshing as it means that the rarity and power of certain metals correspond directly to the level necessary to make them.

The results of the highest levels of metals would certainly be one-of-a-kind works. Things that people would start skirmishes over and build legacies with.

Edit:
One aspect of the rework that I had completely forgotten was 'Masterwork', which I am also very excited about. A recognition of talent, even if mechanically only the last three tiers will be affected by masterwork.
