The Green Room - The History
]
The practice of having a green room in a theatre dates back to the time of Shakespeare.
In the early years of theatre there was always a room set aside for the actors to spend some time composing their thoughts before going on stage. In the interests of calm the walls and ceiling were painted green and the lighting kept subdued.
The colour green was also considered 'restful' for the actors' eyes,
after being on stage having their retinas scorched by the limelights.
Stage actors sometimes had to use stage blood, which tended to splash onto walls.
This looks quite alarming on white walls, but oddly not on green walls.
The same reason surgeons and operating theatre staff wear green scrubs.
After a performance, the green room was a place to relax, unwind and have a few drinks so there was a social aspect to it as well.
TV studios still refer to their hospitality areas as green rooms.
