What are your opinions on companies and the levels of duty of care they currently have?

For example, there could be a corner shop where an individual regularly goes into it and buys a lot of alcohol. This person usually misuses the substance and it becomes apparent when you see the individual outside. Should shops use a moral compass and just not serve this person?

If someone is drunk on premises then yes they may not get served. However some misuse substances to oblivion off of the premises.

It does not stop just here. For example, many games companies are aware that some of their users play an excessive number of hours, such that it would be a burden to the person's health. They sometimes capitalise on this and create more content that encourages this behaviour, or even use loot boxes (which are currently being scrutinised by authorities across a number of countries right now).

And how about general problem gamblers?

Do you think companies should owe a greater duty of care to their consumers in this day and age? Or do you think individuals should take responsibility for themselves, even if perhaps they have some sort of impairment (or are starting to develop one) that prevents or makes it more difficult for them to take responsibility for their health and life?

I think some level of moral duty of care should exist, but, not as a requirement.

I don't think you should force people into certain moral ideologies.

I mean, sure, the bartender shouldn't be serving someone alcohol if they are clearly hammered drunk, but, I don't think the bartender should face punishments if they happen to serve the person.
I'm better than you, but that doesn't mean you're not great! :)

I don't think so. For a start, it would be completely ineffective, not to mention counter-productive for the shop owner.
No one wants a pearl-clutching, self-righteous busybody gate-keeping their shopping.
If there is an issue with alcohol, which does have inherent dangers, then simply dont stock it.

Let people retain their agency. What they do with the purchases is their business.

No I don't think companies should be the self-appointed moral compasses of everyone else.

Personally I'm fed up with being told what it's acceptable to say, what I should be eating, what I should be watching or reading, where I shouldn't be going, what is acceptable to laugh at, what is the correct way to think, acceptable clothes outlets, acceptable goods outlets, what car I should drive, what my attitudes and values ought to be .... on and on and on.

I'm at the point where all the micromanagers and do-gooders and busybodies can just fuck off.
