I think we can bet the reason why there is too much malice is the evolution of the English language itself. The word may had non-malicious meaning hundreds of years ago compared to today.

If I lived there, I'd have voted to keep the name.

The local governing body has really missed a marvellous business opportunity. The article said increasing numbers of tourists have been visiting so why didn't they think of setting up a souvenir shop with various knick-knacks displaying the name. A cafe or tea room called "Fucking Hot Stuff" (or something similar)? A small hotel called ..... well, use your imagination.
All sort of ventures spring to mind.

The profits could have been used for parish enrichment schemes for local people, not to mention offering local employment.

But .... NOOOOO! 'Rude' word. Offensive. Make it go away.
