I know a few people who have self learned a Cyrillic alphabet within a few weeks. There are a lot of free language sites available so there is no reason to fear learning the language.

Learning a language is more than just learning words. You need to put the nouns, verbs pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, etc. in the right place and learn the correct words to be gender specific. You need to hear the words. How do you explain to someone when you need to use the guttural sounds?
Fun Fact: My brother took Spanish in high school. A student from Mexico was in his class and thought it would be an easy A. He flunked. Why? Because the teacher was teaching Formal Spanish from Spain, a different dialect from Mexican Spanish.

If you're serious about it, you really need proper lessons.
You can do a lot online, but you need to be speaking it to get to grips with it properly, just like any language.
No harm in getting used to the alphabet online though, must be loads of courses out there.
Rosetta Stone seem popular, no idea how much it costs tho.
