The human brain is an amazing organ, and the human mind is even more amazing. The minds of those who suffer from multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder will create multiple identities completely separate from each other, each with their own personalities and lives. Sometimes some of the identities are aware of other identities, and some are not, and the number of identities can be as low as two, or as high as thousands.

So, with that in mind... do the people in your dreams know they're in a dream? Do they all have their own identities and personalities created by your mind? Do they always exist, even when you're awake, but you only catch a glimpse of them when you're asleep? If you said something to someone in your dreams tonight, and you saw them in a dream tomorrow night, would they remember what you said previously?

I'd have thought the people in my dreams are just constructs of my own imagination and, as such, would do, say, behave in whatever way my wandering mind instructs them because they are not real in any way.

Yeah I cant really get my head around the original post. I dream almost every time I have a decent sleep.

And a lot of the time it is about people I know, or people I have met but don't know very well. I believe the people in my dreams don't know they are in a dream because my mind created the dream and they don't know they are in it.

I don't know if this answers your question.

According to psychology and more specifically, psychology of dreams, you can't dream a human face that you haven't seen before on vigil. In other words, brain can't create from scratch but it can do astonishing combinations. It tends to "melt" all previous info and since we see lots of people throughout our life... yep, the ones in our dreams have endless possibilities.

What I can remember from some vivid dreams I've had, is people usually are a mixture of family members, current friends, people from my student days, historical figures and even celebrities. Sometimes I can talk to them, but mostly those dreams consist of listening and "doing the quest" (it's like following a script), more than talking.

Also, I haven't had a single "lucid dream" in my life. Some people do. Must be amazing to realize you're in dream while dreaming, taking control of it and doing your will.

That being said, I haven't had (yet) a dream that continues during the next night, either by people showing again or "completing" something missing in previous dreams. I have no idea if those people know if they're in my dream... or I am in theirs... O_o O_o O_o

My dreams are kinda boring and plain, in terms of plot. Once I dreamed I was just a bureaucrat giving away some kind of tokens and saying "NEXT!" every five seconds. I was dressing like a stereotypical secretary from year 1950. That was it :|

Explains why Einstein's brain is preserved and studied( This is just what I recall from a youtube video I saw years back. Don't take my word for it..DUH)

I did see a movie forgot the name now..with Johnny Depp and he had an alternative personality(non aware). He was a bad guy in the end.

Psychology is interesting and yep the human mind is amazing!

Thousands..now that is astounding.

There is a youtube video I saw a few weeks back called ''The Rendezvous Storyboard Animatic''. So..in this case, yes the person in the dreams continue to exist and are very much real with unique personalities. Not going into details because I find it depressing. But, if you like dreams you can check out :P

And in the world of sandman, dreams are very much real. It's basically a separate reality. Would be nice if such a place existed :P

Okay and the real deal about dreams is that they are a figment of our imagination. Maybe for example certain animals you see in dreams symbolize x. For example snakes and spiders are a bad omen depending on the perspective..

I've had dreams about friends of mine..but they aren't continuous and had different personalities of what I know but they exist as a memory in the dreams I guess :P

You tell us, has this or anything similar happened to you? It hasn't to me. My dreams don't usually make much sense though, I get dropped into a scenario for 10 minutes that seems to last hours. Either that or I am dreamless for 90% of my sleep. I feel like dreaming is just what the brain does to prepare us for things in the real world, without distraction by other senses.

It's biological virtual reality; we play through scenes in our heads to help us process what has happened or what might happen. It's either for comfort (if we feel unfulfilled) or to mentally prepare ourselves for future fears. IMO. To test out your hypothesis, imagine something crazy like a hybrid of two drastically different animals, now think about something else, was that hybrid animal still 'in your head' when you took your mind off it? no, not until you thought about it again. Can it 'will' it's way into your thoughts? I don't think so. It's the whole "do you control your thoughts or do your thoughts control you?" critical theorists love to ask "Is water wet?" yada yada. You're at the wheel, being physically 'whole' (unless you believe in wireless / remote influence ie god type stuff) then you're simply imagining things based off your current understanding of the world. Ask yourself this, have you ever learnt anything from an NPC in a dream that you didn't already know? Anything quantifiable that would suggest they have their own memories? Dreams are just our imaginations running wild, without sensory distractions, which keeps us from realising that we're imagining things. Just my 2p. Maybe one day we'll have advanced dreams where we can assign dream characters with partitioned memory to 'resume' past dreams. I don't think we're capable of that right now.

No. This has never happened in my dreams
