My housemate is in dire need of a laptop for surfing the web, email, talking and/or texting (such as FB Messenger), but not for gaming. He lost his job because of down sizing and can't afford one. I'd like to get him a laptop for his birthday next month, but my funds can't afford one over $1000.00, probably more like in the $600.00 to $800.00 range.
Is there a decent laptop for that price range? I'm not laptop savvy, so I have to depend on feedback. Any suggestions?
BTW, right now he's using his Smartphone for everything and surfing the web is getting a bit tedious for him. That's the main reason he wants a laptop.

If it's only going to be used for browsing/social media etc. there are loads of options (new) in that price range. You don't need loads of power so just read some reviews and look for decent build quality.

Buy a two or three year old reconditioned Lenovo Thinkpad-line of laptop.
They are workhorses that have long service life.
I've never heard of Lenovo. Does it run Wins 10?
The Thinkpad line runs just about anything that an x86 PC can run. That even includes Linux. Thinkpads are expensive when brand new, but you can settle for a 2 or 3 year old refurbished Thinkpad and it will serve for a long time.

Manufacturers refurbished laptops usually come with a fairly good warranty. They are not really someone else's problem computers, more a consequence of large corporate users upgrade swap arrangements.
