I think it would be cool if they had abilities for skilling like for instance the way mining is now, if they advanced other skills to that point they could have skill-bilities. For Mining we have rockortunities, but I think that can be only one step in the direction of having skill-bilities where you can do things to make a stronger impact, maybe for a slower next strike or some such thing. They can give you skill-bilities at a cost to your stamina (similar to how adrenaline works) when used, that speed up and make the process of skilling feel as enjoyable as combat. This would make you have to be more present to the process of skilling because if you use a skill ability it takes away the option of being afk, because you have to be there to refresh faster than had you not used your ability.
This would bring the genius of the smithing rework to other skills for an equally refreshingly entertaining experience, where being present to the activity pays off, and being absent makes progress slower. People should always be rewarded for showing an interest, and always be given that reason to be interested, and I think this would work toward that cause.
