Quest suggestion, similar in type to Recipe for Disaster and Dimension of Disaster.

Poor Malignius . Kidnapped by Death, brought to Um to act as a tutor to a new necromancer that doesn't do the whole "binding the undead to their will" thing. (Not that he's a Necromancer equivalent to Evil Dave.)

The quest will give a bit more characterization/background to Malignus as well as

- additional unique and odd rituals that involve necromancy. some that are 1 time. some that are repeatable

- in game lore explanations why/how certain ritual mechanics work (for example: why you can't just stack 20k pure essence or hundreds of bones at one time, why they use bones instead of ashes, etx)

Rewards would naturally be Necromancy XP, XP used in skills to support the sections, at least 1 or 2 Necromancy themed cosmetic overrides (ie: animations, equipment) and whatever else.

Suggested Opening

Requirement: completed Rune Mythos

Malignius feels a little ... stagnant. He admits that he is an unashamed Zamorakian, but more in line with the old First Wizard Tower Red Wizards and Lord Daquarius (not like Solus Dellagar). Even then, he sees himself more of a academic and researcher first and necromancer second. Which might be part of the reason why Death/Harold selected him.

But between his recent research into the tomes around Um and seeing your own progress with being "nice" to the souls you work with in Necromancy, he's realizing how little he has actually achieved.

So, he wants to make a proposal to you. He wants to do a mix of extreme experiments AND a counter-necromancer campaign.

Keep in mind, none of this is out of some heel-face turn by him, this is all for his own personal gain. You can also learn a thing or 2 along the way. He wants to knock a few of his rival Necromancers down a peg (note: none of them are a world ending risk like Raisal is, some would barely register as a nuisance), he wants to stay on Death's "good side" by trying to show some practical yet positive things that Necromancy could achieve, and ... well ... he'll figure out other excuses along the way.

If you ask what his campaign is, he'll mention that it isn't so much as killing of rival necromancers, just messing with them (sort of like a college frat rivalry.) And he has a first target in mind: Invrigar.

These 2 go way back.

As the 2 of you go to the Necromancer Tower, Malignius has the 2 of you do a 2 step prank. First is akin to a Necromancer "bag of flaming poo on the doorstep". While Invrigar and Irwin are dealing with the nuisance, Malignius has you sneak in and replace Invrigar's Ritual Book with "Necromancer's First Ritual Book" (more like a child's story book with cartoonish descriptions of harmless rituals).

Malignius will have you read Invrigar's Ritual Book, which you learn is filled with nothing but the most basic rituals. Malignius will explain that Invrigar isn't really a threat to anyone. He is a master and well versed in the most basic aspects of Necromancy, and would be a great first teacher. He compares Invrigar to a blacksmith that only works with bronze. It is great to have a solid understanding of the foundations of a skill. But in order to grow, you must be willing to try many things. Experiment. Etc.

Safety Dance

Malignius has you join him for a 'safety lesson' on Necromancy Rituals. He gives you some robes to wear and then teleports the 2 of you to a far off temple dungeon. In there, is a group of several young necromancers.

Malignius begins to have everyone take a seat. The scene eventually plays out like a substitute teacher lecturing a group of middle school students. Malignius is giving a very droll speech, but the other students are being very noisy and disruptive. During the speech, you get snippets of the "safety" he was referring to with some rather unsettling snippets.

When he finishes, he has everyone pick up a [ack of very basic ritual materials.

During the rituals, you get a 101 of why you don't try to stack too much of something into the ritual circle. Several incidents occur with everyone getting splattered with very weak necroplasm.

Finally, he has everyone do the final safety lesson by putting a massive amount of bones into the center of the ritual circle.

Naturally, this summons a giant skeletal horror that begins to attack everyone. Malignius has you distract it for a minute. Luckily, it can't leave the ritual circle and then falls apart.

Malignius eventually explains this is exactly why you don't do hundreds of bones at once. It summons or creates some sort of giant monstrosity. The good news is that it stops being a problem after a minute or 2 and it can't leave the ritual area. The bad news is that short time frame, several necromancers tend to lose their lives.

Wilderness Tree Revival

Malignius will be examining an Ava's Device and a Blessed Hatchet. After you arrive, he states he wants to take his first stab at proving Necromancy can be beneficial. In a safe, controlled environment. His research into the libraries of Um uncovered some interesting possibilities.

He brings you and his 4 elemental mage assistants out to the Wilderness where there was once a forest. Now, just dead trees.

He wants to see if Necromancy could be used in helping to revive Forinthry. But, he's just going to start with 1 common tree.

The 6 of you start a ritual on one of the dead trees. The tree sort of starts to revive, and then it dies again. He has the 6 of you try again. Same results. He makes some notes. He figures, eh, we'll try 1 more time ...

The ritual repeats. The tree sort of revives. And then ... it starts to become a little too lively ... but not alive. Turns out an evil tree spirit happened to inhabit the tree right as the third ritual attempt concluded. Malignius notes that this isn't a simple Evil Tree, it is an Undead Evil Tree. Normal Hatchets won't work on it since it is undead, and blessed hatchets won't work on it since it is a tree spirit. He suggests Unblessed Hatchets. He sends you to perform a ritual on 6 Blessed Hatchets all at once. You state you know that is risk, but he retorts that time is of the essence (And that he doesn't want Death to know). He and the 4 mages will keep it occupied until you get back.

Perform a special ritual on the 6 Blessed Hatchets to, in effect, remove the blessing but add a necromatic effect.

You return and the 6 of you quickly chop down the Evil Undead Tree. Just as you get the last chop, all 6 Unblessed Hatchets crumble to dust. (An example of why you don't try to ritually empower too many items at one time.)

note: all of these are just a recommended starting point.

No Gods.
No end of the world stuff.
Just low end rituals, humor, and building on the lore of necromancy.

If you have quasi-comedic rituals or something that would fit within a reasonable explanation for something in Necromancy, feel free to post a short mini-quest section that would work.
